Parallel Worlds - Part 2

Each one was able to leap past the first ten steps to the first landing, then two quick steps across the landing to leap up to the main landing before the shattered out main doors to the classical building. The security guard, a burly man with a fu manchu mustache, was kneeling over another guard. The prone guard had his head at a terrible angle; his neck was obviously broken.

"By the gods..." Rei whispered, hating to see people killed.

Julia also averted her gaze somewhat from the poor man lying on the ground.

The burly guard pointed into the building, past the glass that littered the floor and landing. "They're in the Physics Room!" he said breathlessly. "He killed some woman and he's got this dude now! It's the second hallway on the right!"

"Just WHO are they?" Rei demanded to know. She was quite reluctant to just go blindly into battle without having some idea of what she would be fighting.

The guard shook his head quickly, with one hand on his dead compatriot. "I dunno, I've never seen either one before! They..." he started to say, before Ultra Girl took off past him.

"Right, let's go!" Julia said to Rei upon hearing the security guard's direction. In the heat of the moment and upon hearing of the endangered innocents, she forgot Rei's cautionary comment about the wrecked car next door. Ultra Girl charged up the steps into the building and looked for the hallway the guard had described.

"Hades," Rei thought as she chased after Julia. "Doesn't that girl know its stupid to do this?!"

The interior of the building was a wide, circular atrium with a fountain in the middle. Now the marble edging of the fountain was shattered on one side, allowing the floor to be coated in a thin layer of expanding water.

"Slow DOWN!!!" the Asian-Amazon demanded of her slightly older sister. After seeing all the destruction Rei was even less eager to run into whatever had caused all of this.

The nimble Amazons traversed the water-coated, slick floor with lithe ease, Ultra Girl in the lead. The first hall had a banner over it proclaiming it's contents to be the "Chemistry Room". The banner over the second hallway twenty feet past was gone, as was most of the stonework over the doorway, now crumbled in a two foot heap. With a single, fluid motion, Ultra Girl bounded over the pile of rubble and into the Physics Room.

Rei just rolled her eyes and growled as Julia went in there. If it had been just about any else, she would have left her on her own. No way was Rei that crazy. However this was a sister so.... "Gods help me," she muttered and followed Julia in.

A site greeted her eyes that was, simply enough, astounding. The room had been a battleground. Exhibits were destroyed, smoking, some burning, and cluttered the floors. The walls bore burn marks and even a hole that lead into the Chemistry Room. A few exhibits along the walls of the wide, rectangular room were still undamaged, but they were very few. The tall, narrow windows were shattered out, with a few shards still remaining.

Ultra Girl surveyed the carnage that used to be the Physics room and considered her options. The realization of the power required to do all this gave her pause. "Slow down girl, and think this through," she told herself. "Maybe charging in here wasn't the best of ideas...."

The next thing that caught Julia's eyes was the man in the middle of the mayhem. He was of average height, and sturdy but unimpressive build. However, his entire body seemed to be made up of a bluish gem-like material. Every angle of a typical male body was a facet on this man's form; even a male organ, faceted and reflective, dangled before two glassy testicles. His eyes glowed with an azure energy, as if they were simply holes to some wild power source. He stood with one hand on his hip, and his other hand upraised. From his open palm, a crackling beam of azure energy warbled upwards.

"What kind of being is THAT?!" Ultra Girl puzzled upon seeing the jewel-become-man standing in the middle of the room. "I've never seen or heard of anything even close to this." Julia stepped cautiously in a low crouch while examining the scene. With her legs slightly bent and weight shifted to the balls of her feet, she stayed ready to leap aside or to defend herself if the crystalline being attacked her.

"Dammit Ultra Girl... Whoa!" Rei exclaimed as she caught sight of the villain when she got to the doorway. This was something she knew was new. Unless he was a magic user, Rei hadn't come across any thing else like this before. She wasn't exactly sure how to take on something like this.

At the end of the beam of energy was a man, trapped by strange, oversized, ethereal hands that seemed to come directly out of the blue energy that crackled around him. The huge, twin hands were visibly crushing the man. His strong featured face grimaced in agony as his lips were slowly turning blue from the inability to expand his lungs. His hair was a soft brown, with wisps of gray at the temples and in the short goatee he wore. His clothing was a silvery tunic and pants, with black boots and gloves, and a silver clasp around his neck. His arms were pinned to his sides under the huge energy hands, as his feet kicked helplessly.

"First we do is rescue him!" Rei said to Julia as the stood just outside the room.

"Okay, let's see if one of us can distract that crystal...being...while the other one frees him," Ultra Girl agreed while pointing at the man being crushed. "I'm afraid we're too late to help her, though," Julia said gravely, nodding to at the nearby wall.

On the floor, crumpled against the wall in a bloody heap, was a woman. She wore a black velvet dress, now riding high to reveal a black silk thong. Soft boots adorned her feet and matching gloves her hands. Her blonde hair was across her face, and coated with a flow of crimson blood. Under the blonde hair the heroines could see the gaping hole in the dead woman's forehead, as if someone had taken a scoop out of her brain. Her broken, shattered body had cracked a piece of the wall, telling the two heroines how hard she had struck the brick wall.

Rei quickly looked away but wondered if she hadn't seen the woman somewhere else when she had been alive. "Another heroine?" she wondered to herself.

"Good plan. You distract and I'll get in there get him loose," Rei said as she quickly studied the creature. "For gods sake be careful! This thing looks very dangerous!"

Julia expression changed to one of grim determination. Obviously two people had already been killed, one possibly another heroine, by this creature. This fiend had to be very powerful to have caused all this destruction. Furthermore, the security guard had said he had never seen "them" before. This told Julia that there was another villain loose on the scene. She wanted to be make sure that she and Rei didn't end up as their next victims.

Rei cracked her knuckles as she got ready to go in there. Why she did that she didn't know. She was just copying Captain Liberty who she had seen do that on occasion. Rei suspected this thing was a magic user and therefore quite powerful. She had run across one other and that experience still made her wake up some nights screaming.

She planned to use her speed, agility and anything she could get her hands on in the room to help her. Julia moved warily with her left side toward the middle of the room and her right toward the entrance. She tried to keep one eye on the doorway, or what was left of it, as she slowly flanked the pulsating creature. Julia quickly glanced around the room to note the location of debris that could be used as shields or thrown weapons if need be.

Rei moved along the edge of the wall, trying to stay as out of view as she could. Julia was the decoy so she didn't want to do anything to draw attention to herself. Like her sister, she looked for any sort of weapon she could use. Odds are they wouldn't hurt it but you never could tell.

Most of the floor in the room was littered with all kinds of debris from the exhibits, but there was really nothing left of them standing. Ultra Girl had to step carefully over the detritus that remained, from fibreoptic cables to speakers to computer keyboards to even tennis balls used to exhibit pneumatics.

"What a mess!" Rei thought as she moved, watching the creature with her eyes while her ears listened for anything else.

As Ultra Girl entered the room, the man created, apparently, entirely out of some gigantic blue gem, turned to look at her. She could see his features in the facets, from his eyebrows to the creases that formed around his nose. The expression she saw now was confusion. "What happened to..." he started to say in a low, rumbling, rasping voice.

He stopped the instant Ultra Woman came following in. "Duck!" he yelled as he raised his other hand, palm open, towards Rei. In less than a half second, energy coalesced through his body, focused on his hand, spun about in a crackling of energy until forming into a hard ball of blue. At the end of that brief moment, the ball hurtled directly at Rei's chest...

"Rei, get down!" Ultra Girl yelled when she saw the ball of energy target her partner. "That strange, why did he warn Rei just before he attacked?" she wondered. Now that the creature's attention was divided, Julia sprinted toward the villain in hopes of freeing his captive.

"What the...." Rei exclaimed as she tried to dive out of the way of the blue ball. Instinctively putting up a braceleted wrist to deflect it.

The blue ball sped at Ultra Woman as fast as any bullet, giving the heroine only one option; her Amazon bracelets. The blue ball of energy struck her metal sheathed wrist and exploded in a small sphere of crackling azure energy. In a brilliant display of energy, it dissipated in a crackled aura of azure power that left dots in front of Rei's eyes for a moment. Most of the energy faded in less than a second against Rei's Amazon bracelets, but enough of the power remained and passed through the bracelets to make her teeth chatter for a moment. It didn't really harm her in any way, but it did give the superheroine an idea of how powerful the ball would have been had it struck her.

The Asian-Amazon curled in a ball as she finished her dive. With a twist of her lithe body, she ended up back on her feet. Rei shook her head slightly to clear the tingling the ball's blast had caused in her brain. "Man that's wicked!" she gasped. She saw that Julia had switched roles and was the rescuer now. That was quite okay with Rei. It showed the girl had some tactical sense.

Ultra Girl dashed to within twelve feet of the crystalline being then leaped the remaining distance. She timed her attack so she would pass just in front of him, from his right to left, and land just out of arms reach. As she passed, Julia kicked at the arm which was crushing his prisoner in order to free him.

The man seemed to ignore Ultra Girl as she approached him; he was intent on the other Amazon as Ultra Woman blinked away the dots before her eyes. Ultra Girl could hear the wheezes for breath from the helpless man in the energy hoops that were slowly crushing the life from him.

"Oh hell..." Rei muttered as she saw the creatures hand glowing again as he prepared another blast. She readied herself to make another leap, this time farther to get out of the line of fire.

Stepping over the debris over the floor, the young Amazon made her aim, and her powerful legs launched her into the air. The toe of her red boot struck the gemstone man in the left elbow, eliciting a gruff grunt of pain as he jerked the arm back to him.

As Julia landed in a crouch, her skirt swirling around her hips, the ball of energy that was forming in his right hand for a new blast at Rei faded away, as did the hoops that trapped his prisoner. With a thump, the man in the air fell to the ground, gasping desperately for oxygen as he held his ribs. The expression of agony on his face could easily convince both Amazons that he might have a broken rib or two.

The creature seemed to be concentrating on Julia now instead of Rei. Slowly and carefully, Rei moved closer. Intending to sprint in and rescue the man before any more harm could come to him.

"What the hell happened to you?" the man roared at Ultra Girl. "Did that son of a bitch," he said, nodding towards the groaning man on the floor, "fuck you over? How'd he do that to you?!" he demanding, pointing at Julia. He seemed to ignore Rei, as all his attention was fixed on Ultra Girl. "Don't matter much, you aren't yourself. If you fight me, I'll mop the floor with you, Julius. Just stay there and I'll choke this asshole's throat until he fixes you."

The gem-like man's questions made absolutely no sense to Ultra Girl. "Why is he speaking as if he knows me?! He called me 'Julius'??" she wondered. "He seems to think that the poor man he was crushing is responsible for my attacking him, that I'd be his friend otherwise. Maybe I can turn this to my advantage....."

Ultra Woman, forgotten by the strange, rock-like man, knew this was her chance while he was distracted. From the darkened ceiling above, a figure dropped out of the darkness, appearing like a shadow in an instant. His boots, without warning to the heroine, struck her in the base of the neck. It knocked the heroine forward onto her hands and knees as the nimble figure bounced back, landing first on his hands, then somersaulting onto his feet. Quickly he reached into his billowing cape.

"UUhhhhhhhhhhh!" Rei gasped as she went to her knees, starbursts of pain exploding in her head. Quickly, her training forced her overcome the pain and shunt it aside. In a single motion she sprang to her feet, ready to deal with this new attacker.

Because she was still trying to watch the door to the room, Julia saw Rei's attacker but was a moment too late to warn her sister. "Blast!" she thought, "I knew the second attacker would show up! But if I try to help Rei, this poor man will be defenseless..."

Ultra Girl held her ground as ordered by the crystalline being, but shuddered visibly as if she were fighting an invisible hand upon her. "Yess....finish....him," she stammered while pointing at the downed man. "If I can just get him to turn his back to me...."

As the azure-gem being turned back to his first victim, Ultra Girl leaped at him from behind. Just before she collided with him she aimed an elbow strike into the back of his head. By adding the force of her jump to her superhuman strength, she tried to down the glowing villain with a single blow.

With a gratifying crunch, Ultra Girl's elbow cracked into the base of the man's neck. As the shock of hitting living stone rippled up her arm and made her hand tingle numbly, the man pitched forward, rolling across the floor until he came to a stop next to the wall.

Looking back over her shoulder as she spun about to face her new assailant, she found herself looking up at a man in a full suit of gray leather, with a matching cape. Dark eyes narrowly glared back down at her. In his hand was a thick white pad, which darted forward towards Rei's face as his other hand groped for a handful of rich, glossy Amazon hair.

Knowing exactly what that pad contained Rei grabbed the arm that contained it and tried to force it upwards away form her face. At the same time, a foot connected with the attackers crotch using her incredible strength and speed.

The oriental Amazon's arm moved in a blur, knocking aside his pad just as it grazed her face, allowing her to smell the sickly sweet scent of the chloroform. With her hand around his wrist, the man held onto the pad as he reached under the volumnuous cape with his free hand. As he was pulled forward by Rei, he held up a tiny glass object.

Rei saw it but was in the middle of something so she couldn't deal with it just know. Hopefully what would happen next would take care of whatever it was.

Dropping to her back, Rei placed the heel of her boot in the man's stomach. Pulled forward by both his momentum and the heroine's much greater strength, he was lifted off his feet. In that moment, he activated the device.

With a flash that momentarily illuminated the entire room, a brilliant burst of light exploded in Rei's face. Instinctively she continued her motion, and kicked out, sending the man hurtling head over heels across the room. As she stumbled to her feet, all Ultra Woman could see was a million tiny spots of light from the point blank flashing.

"Shit!!!" Rei yelled, she had spent way too much time with Brian and absorbed some of his foul language, as she was blinded. For a moment she panicked from being blind, however in a second she got control back. Take a deep breath, Rei closed her eyes and stretched out with her other senses as replacements. They weren't as good as her eyes, but they would have to do. It wasn't like the first time she had been blinded. An instructor back home had made her wear a blindfold for days so that she had to learn not to rely on just her eyes.

Ultra Girl was about to press her advantage on the crystal villain when she caught a glimpse of the flash out of the corner of her eye. She decided to risk a quick glance back to her partner. When she turned to look in that direction, her field of view was suddenly filled by the sight of Rei's opponent flying straight at her.

"What the...!" Julia yelled as she threw herself aside to dodge the human projectile.

The caped, leather clad man flew across the room, forcing Ultra Girl to pause in her attack on the stone man long enough to duck his hurtling partner. He flew over Julia's head, and crashed heavily into the wall. Bouncing off, he landed in a pile of debris that once was a exhibit on static. He groaned as the gray man fought to stay conscious.

"Hopefully he's out of the fight. Good job, Rei," Ultra Girl mused. "Should I try to help the injured person or make sure the gray man is down for good?" she thought as she quickly tried to choose between the two strategies.

Meanwhile the man of stone, his back against the wall ninety degrees from his friend, glared in anger at the two heroines. "all right you fucking idiot, I gave you a chance! I don't care what that old fucking pervert did to you, you're going down!" Raising his hands, palms out, energy coalesced through his body and into the hands, and a ball of cobalt energy shot out, one at the brunette Ultra Girl before him, and the other at the blinded Ultra Woman across the room...

"Or my third choice is, try not to get lit up like a Christmas tree!" Ultra Girl realized when she saw the crystalline villain prepare a pair of energy bolts. She leaped in the direction of the man slumped against the wall in an effort to put herself between the blue and gray assailants. "Hopefully he'll hesitate if his partner is in the line of fire," she thought. "If nothing else, I should be able to draw his fire away from Rei." As she vaulted into position she kept both her bracelets ready to deflect the energy ball if her plan failed.

Rei heard his words and the crackle of him building up the balls again. She didn't know which heroine was a target, she or Julia but she couldn't take the rick of being wrong. With a great leap, Rei flew up as she tried to avoid being hit...

As the two balls of energy fired out, traveling with a crackling intensity, and a speed faster than any mere bullet, they hurtled at the two heroines on either side of the blue stone man. Simultaneously they struck the Amazons.

Ultra Girl's bracelets blocked the blasted ball of power, dissipating it as tiny amounts traveled up her arms to make her quiver for a moment. The effect passed in an instant, but she too now knew how very powerful the blast this man could throw truly were.

"Yeeowww!!" Ultra Girl yelled when the residual energies dissipated through her body. As she landed on the Physics room floor she shuddered for a moment to try to shake off the effects of the blue bolt. "Okay, I definitely DON'T want take one of those without blocking it with my bracelets!" she muttered.

As Ultra Woman gathered herself for a leap that normally would have taken but a moment for the powerful heroine to do, she started to leap into the air, only to be struck right in the middle of her gut. The ball exploded in a flurry of blue energy that enveloped Rei, sending her hurtling up and back. Between the blast and the lift she had started, the oriental superheroine was thrown upwards, slamming into the thick stonework over the door. The stone compressed and cracked in the concussion that resulted.

"Uuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!" Rei groaned as she hit the stone. Her body landed on the polished granite floor with an audible thump. If it hadn't been for her remarkable Amazon body, she would have been more badly injured then given some quickly fading bruises. Rei was almost knocked out however. "Ultra Woman!" Julia yelled when she saw the blue ball strike Rei and slam her into the wall. Her attention was divided between the azure villain and her fellow sister, now slumped over on the ground. "Hades, is she all right?!" Ultra Girl thought in alarm when looking at the downed Amazon. "Be calm...," Julia reassured herself. "Rei took out the gray man. If I can find a way to stop this crystal villain, we can still win..."

Seeing Ultra Woman drop to the floor in front of the door, limp and dazed from the combined blows, the stone man turned all his attention to Ultra Girl. He took a couple of steps towards her, ignoring the fact that his accomplice was directly behind her. In fact, his face curled up into a rough, etched grin of malevolence.

Ultra Girl shifted her stance and backed up slightly as she prepared for a close up fight with the powerful villain. "Perhaps I can beat him in a hand-to-hand battle," she thought. "I haven't seen him display any feats of great physical strength or speed. He must be afraid to fire any more of those bolts since I'm right in front of---"

Suddenly Julia felt a stab in her left buttock, right at the soft curve of the cheek. As the tiny needle jabbed through the blue satin of her skirt, the gray man, one arm dangling uselessly, used his other to spear the needle and its chemical into the young heroine.

A giant blue hand shot out from the stone man, arced through the air, and swerved down at Rei. Reaching the peak of the apogee, the hand came down. Ultra Woman was slammed violently into the hard granite floor, raising a miniature cloud of dust and debris from the assorted destroyed exhibits. Before she could react, she was lifted again, but this time slammed down atop a stout, small oaken desk along the near wall.

Ultra Girl looked curiously at the gem in the villain's forehead. "Doesn't Tania's friend Sapphire have a gem like that on her head?" she wondered.

Rei saw the stone in the man's forehead and was surprised. She had seen a heroine in Megapolis with a similar item but she was an agent of good.

Placing his hand on the chest of the scrawny little man, Argent muttered more mystic words. The hair on the back of the Amazon's necks stood on end as the hand glowed. When it reached a certain intensity, it spread out to cover the little man, then receded. As it did, the man disappeared.

Julia's eyes opened wide when the blond man vanished under the magician's touch. "Whoever this Argent is, he's obviously VERY powerful," she realized."Perhaps Rei was right to treat him cautiously...."

"And just where did he go?" Rei demanded. "He's got a lot to answer for here!" Namely Rei wishing to ring his neck for raping her.

"Again, patience..."

Argent stood back up to face the two heroines. "You both deserve a greater explanation, may we all go somewhere more discrete?" he asked calmly.

"That we do but we won't go any where until I do this...." In a single, blinding motion Rei grabbed Julia's lasso from her golden belt and whipped it around the stranger. "Now answer me this," Rei commanded as she held the lasso in her hands. "Are you here to harm my sister or myself?"

Ultra Girl looked at her sister with a slightly annoyed look on her face as Rei questioned the wizard. "I could have done that..." she fumed silently.

Argent didn't have time to do anything more than blink before the tingling magic of the lasso was already around him. He was startled for a moment, but quickly regained his aplomb as he saw Ultra Woman was only questioning him for now.

"Harm? That is a difficult topic, Ultra Woman. You see, I mean neither of you direct harm, presuming this one," he said, nodding at Julia, "is your sister. However, due to my actions I have endangered your entire world greatly."

"And if she wasn't my sister what would you do? Also what action did you do?"

Argent paused at the aggressive tone in Ultra Woman's voice. "As I believe I wish good to your world, I would assume my counterpart has done great evil. I hope you do not get the two of us confused."

He looked down at the lasso around his arms ruefully. "Your magic is very effective, as I suspected. I don't know why you appear as you do though, but I hope you are as good as your counterpart is malignant. You see, my world is much different than yours, and my story is a long one."

"Perhaps you were expecting her to appear as one of the other Amazons who has previously taken the mantle of Ultra Woman," Julia added. "If you describe what you were expecting, we'll know if this is the case." She planned to wait until Argent had shown himself to be trustworthy or until she and Rei had some privacy before stating what she had already deduced. Based on Fogg's description and his use of the name "Tanis", Ultra Girl realized that Argent had expected to encounter Tania as Ultra Woman.

Argent turned to Ultra Girl. "Yes, perhaps that is it. This one would not be your..." he paused to think for a moment, "mother? The prev..." He frowned as his eyes glazed over in deeper thought. "Ah, perhaps a new topic would be in order. You see, our two worlds have many things in common, and many things drastically different, but I suspect the timelines do not coincide."

Rei had a sneaking suspicion as to what might be going on here based on what he had said so far. However, she didn't want to reveal it in case she was wrong. She also hoped Julia wouldn't confirm his mentioning about Tania being her mother. Rei figured that bit of info should be kept quiet as much as possible.

"As to the bejeweled thug that disappeared, I merely drained away the energy that was keeping him in your universe. I did nothing but return him to his rightful place in the cosmos." He touched the lasso curiously. "This is very similar, but also very different."

"I take it you're a magic user of sorts, correct? Do you use it for good or evil?

Looking back to the two heroines, he added, "If we are to work together to save your world from becoming what mine has become, we should find a quiet place to speak, so that I might tell you all you must be told."

Rei sighed slightly. His answers were vague in places but she could detect no really evil purposes. "All right... We'll find a quiet rooftop or something for you to tell us your story. However I command you not to harm me or my sister, go it?"

Argent nodded. "If my intent had been to harm you, I would have had many opportunities. Your..rope...compels me to agree with you, so now not only do I mean you no harm, but I have can do naught but mean you no harm. It does make it rather more difficult for me to prove that I mean you no harm while under your compulsion."

"That the rope forces you to admit it proves it to me more then any of your actions," Rei said. "Actions can be used as deceptions rather then truth."

Ultra Woman released the man from the lasso and returned it to Julia. "Sorry," she said as she saw the frosty look on her sister's lovely face. "Yours was nearer then mine."

Julia's frown softened upon receiving her sister's apology. "A simple 'May I?' will do in the future," she replied, her face changing into a half-scolding, half-playful expression. "I think the building next door is only a few floors high. Shall we continue our discussion there?"

"That sounds very satisfactory, Ultra Girl," Argent agreed as the lasso slipped off him. "The sooner the better, we may not have much time, I fear."

He quickly held his hands out to his sides. They both flashed of brilliant silver, which widened in the flash of an eye to encircle the two Amazons. With a burst, it swallowed them both.

"What..." Rei started to say as then vanished.

As the light receded, both young women had their hair wafted about by the strong evening breeze as it blew atop the roof of the seven story building. Their boots crunched in the gravel that lined the top of the building. "I apologize for the sudden move, but we must hurry, as there is little time."

Ultra Girl blinked several times to re-orient herself to her new surroundings. "The next time we travel this way," she said dryly, "you might want to warn us first."

Rei stared at him with daggers in her eyes. "You do that again without asking first and I will be very upset. And you don't wish to see me very upset."

"I will get to the crux. This world is very different from mine. In yours, the powers of good, have, overall, won the great battles in your history. In my world, in many cases, the forces of evil have won. The evil that was victorious has since nearly destroyed civilization on my planet, leaving many dead, some nations mere puppets, and society on the verge of anarchy."

As strange as it may seem, Rei couldn't find fault with that concept. She had always thought there was an opposite type version of her world out there. Everything seem to have its opposite so why not a whole world. She just never thought she would come in contact with it.

"Those people with metahuman powers on this world that commit crimes are eventually defeated, and either jailed, executed, or slain by their own machinations. On my world, so many times it has been those of good intent, many times those you would call heroines, that are defeated, and they suffer executions, enslavement, or death in battle. By watching your world, I have discovered that many times, if someone died in my world, that person's counterpart in this one also was slain in some way. It does not always immediately coincide, as was the case of the first Manazon in my world slain; it was many months before the counterpart in yours was slain."

Julia remembered the slain woman called Ebony from the recent battle and wondered if her "counterpart" in this world was now in danger. Of course, if Argent was correct, her counterpart here would be a villain...

"Doesn't sound too different from this world," Rei thought. "Only slightly off from what we face right now."

"With my world in chaos, and millions dying of starvation, disease, and war, all brought about due to the anarchy and fear hatched by the metapowered evil that controlled so much of the world, I thought to come here, to your world, and seek assistance."

Argent's expression changed slowly as he spoke, his voice changing until it was tinged with guilt. "Now I have brought this danger to your world. The malignancy that has nearly destroyed my land discovered my goal, and attacked me as I was opening the portal. I was to give Ebony the energy needed to maintain herself in your world, and she was to contact the heroes and heroines of this world and ask for help. We were attacked as the spell was opening the portal. I believe they suspected they could come to this fresh world, not one despoiled like mine, so that they could pillage anew."

"Are you the only person who can open these portals?" Ultra Girl asked. "If someone else can create them, we will need to stop them as well."

He nodded to Ultra Girl. "To my knowledge, I am the only mage on my world capable of such a thing. However, if the parallels hold true, my duplicate here has either already done so, or may at some point in the future discover the means to peer across the universes."

"Oh joy...." Rei muttered softly as she shook her head. If there are universes like the one he came from out there, then there are probably worse ones as well. "This sounds like a Pandora's box type of thing. We must make sure that doesn't happen."

"Just how many of these attackers came through in addition to the two we have met so far?" Ultra Woman asked. She suspected more then the two she and Julia had run into so far. And if they were anything like them, this world was in for some trashing unless they were stopped.

Argent sighed under his breath. "I truly do not know, Ultra Woman. There was the battle, and the vortex engulfed the entire area. I assume some of the criminals were scattered, but myself, Ebony, and the two criminals you both dispatched are all I can speak for. There are others, to be sure."

"If would have been asking for two much that those were the only two," Rei thought with a frown. She knew that it was not going to be fun until this was ll over with. "I do hope you're not going to tell us that there are more powerful villains then the two we fought already loose in the city, are you?"

"They are as powerful as their counterparts in this world, just as the two you met are synonymous with their parallels, whom you may know."

"This is going to be real fun..." Rei sighed as she rubbed her forehead.

He held out his hands. "And here we are. I need your help now not to save my world, but to save yours. We must find these horrors, and return them to my world. In my selfishness, I have endangered a place that I should not have looked anyway. My mistake was to perform an act of desperation, and for that, I can only apologize to both of you."

"Perhaps it was a mistake but I can't begrudge you for at least trying what you did," Rei said. "Perhaps if I was in your position I would have done the same thing."

"Yes, I can see that you acted in the hope of helping your world." Julia added. "Do you know where these beings would go here or what they would try to seek out? If we can capture them, perhaps they can be imprisoned here so they will not be a menace to either of our worlds."

Rei wasn't exactly sure how you could impression such powerful beings except by killing them. However she kept her thoughts to herself. Best to let Julia look at the bright side while she looked at the dark.

The expression of gratitude for the understanding of the two Amazons was plain upon Argent's lined face. "Thank you, thank you both. I have made a grievous mistake, but I wish to make amends to both yourself and your world."

"You have a solid idea of the concept, Ultra Girl," he said to the two beautiful young women, "but there are other means. You see, to transfer here, the object brought over must be imbued with energy of this dimension. It is difficult to explain, but without that energy to keep the object here, it is returned to its original universe. That is what I did to Ebony and Bluestone, I absorbed the energy that maintained their existence here, and when that was depleted, they were drawn back to their own universe. Therefore, no imprisonment is needed, all we need do is drain away the energy they gathered during the transfer, and they will instantly be drawn away from your world.""And you're the only one who can do that I bet?" Rei asked. "And I also bet you have to be in direct physical contact for it to work."

Yet again, in an almost infuriatingly calm voice, Argent said only, "Patience."

"He says that one more time I'll to punch something," Rei thought. "And it might be him."

"As to what they will do here, I cannot say. They are individuals, just as you or I, and what they will do is unknown to me. I realize you are attempting to come up with a way to track them, and wisely so. However, all we need to do is track the energy that has imbued them, and we will find each of the villains."

He reached into the folds of his silvery tunic, and after a moment of digging around inside it, his hand came back out gripping a thin silver rod, about a foot long and not more than a half inch in diameter. The tip of the tiny rod was of a whiter metal, perhaps white gold. "Using this," he said, offering it to Ultra Girl, "we can locate the strongest source of vortex energy, as compared to the distance away. You should feel a tug, as if it were wishing to lead you towards the source. Once that source is eliminated, it will then seek out the next strongest source. You need not worry about it moving on its own; it will only work when held in the hand."

Rei was about to accept the rod but felt Julia move past her before she could. Deep down, she wondered about Argent's story. Something in it just didn't seem to fit and that bugged her.

Julia accepted the metal wand from the wizard and examined it. It looked unremarkable when she examined it for any type of mechanism. She held the rod in her hand and slowly began moving it from side to side, trying to feel the tug that Argent had described.

The small rod felt like the handle of a leash, with some invisible dog gently pulling at it as she pointed the object to the south, towards Reichsborough and Zwicken.

"The nearest source of the dimensional energy is in that direction," Ultra Girl commented as she pointed the rod in the direction it was pulling toward.

"To remove the energy, you will need an item from my world that will dissipate the energy of the criminal. If you will give me a moment, I will summon forth the item, and give it to you."

"I stand corrected" Rei said., watching him closely as she still didn't trust him.

Argent gestured the two heroines to step back, as he moved to the center of the roof. Ignoring the screaming sounds of the sirens that were starting to surround the Museum across the way, he closed his eyes and put his head to his chest. A faint aura of white energy was noticeable after a few seconds, and it slowly grew. It was mesmerizing, but it was slow. After an entire minute, he was surrounded by a nimbus of white energy, not blinding, but strong enough to be seen easily.

"The police are arriving," Ultra Girl noted when she heard the sirens closing in on the museum. "We should leave soon if we don't want to be delayed by answering their questions."

"That they will want to question is quite an understatement," Rei said with a nod. "Time to find another rooftop."

Suddenly the sirens were drowned for a moment by a roaring sound. It was like the sound of a tidal wave, growing higher and higher. It sounded as if the wave were just about to crest and come crashing down, but it only grew louder. After ten seconds, the sirens across the street were drowned out, although Argent was still dimly highlighted by the nimbus.

"Argent, the police will be coming HERE soon!" Ultra Girl yelled over the roaring noise. "How much longer do you need--"

BOOOOOM

As the exploding sound echoed in the distance, a small disc clattered to the ground halfway between Argent and the Amazons. It was about four inches in diameter, with a silver sheen and a whiter edge on it. It was only about a millimeter thick. It rolled around to a stop, as Argent fell back onto his backside.

"Nhhhh..." he moaned as searchlights flooded the seventh floor rooftop from the numerous police cars below...

"Argent!" Ultra Girl shouted as she rushed forward to catch the falling mage. She grabbed him just in time to cushion his impact with the rooftop. Julia looked in the direction of the police who must have heard the deafening thunderclap. "Rei, I think we should take the object he summoned," she said while pointing at the disc on the ground, "and make our exit. The police must have heard that explosion at the end. They'll be heading up here any minute now." Ultra Girl raised the dazed magician back to his feet, checking to see if he was fit to travel.

"Quite correct there sister!" Rei said as she picked the object up. "Can you carry him as we make our exit or should I. We must leap to that building there I think," she said, pointing to a roof nearby and slightly lower.

Argent was insensible in Ultra Girl's arms. He was definitely alive, and somewhat conscious, but he obviously had no idea of anything going on around him. Whatever he had done to bring forth this little disc had plainly drained him to a great degree.

"I've got him," Julia said as she steadied the dazed wizard. "We'll have to try to revive him on the next rooftop."

"Ready?" Rei asked Julia as she got ready for the leap.

"Okay, let's go," Ultra Girl replied. She scooped Argent up into her arms and leaped down to the building next door.

As powerful legs carried each Amazon across the alley behind the building to the next rooftop over, then descended about two stories to the top of a tar-painted, old roof. The searchlights strained over their heads, still looking up brightly at the previous roof. In Ultra Girl's arms, Argent mumbled, "Put me down, I will be well." His voice was ethereal, and half conscious.

Ultra Girl carefully lowered Argent onto the rooftop but kept one hand on his back to make sure he wouldn't topple over. She then turned her attention to the wand in her hand to re-check the location of the nearest tran-dimensional beings.

"Crossing the divide between this world and mine takes a great deal out of me. That disc," Argent said, his voice sagging and weak, with a nod towards the item in Ultra Woman's hand, "will drain away the energy that keeps the criminals in this world. It is not instantaneous, but will take about five minutes or so. Therefore you will have to capture them for a short time, or at least find a way for that disc to come in contact with them for the time needed. The disc will remain here, but they will leave."

Julia rolled her eyes when Argent explained that the disc needed to be in contact for five minutes in order to work. She didn't relish the idea of going after more supervillains that she knew nothing about. Ultra Girl thought about asking Argent if he could summon an additional disc, but one look at the spent mage changed her mind.

Rei looked down at the disk and then looked at Argent. "You're kidding I hope," she said. From the look on his face, she knew he wasn't. Keeping that disk in contact with them for at least five minutes wasn't going to be easy to say the least! "Sister," Rei said the Julia. "Next time can we eat at home rather then out?"

"I suppose we can ask that nice boy at Bonnaducci's to deliver the pizza instead..." Julia replied with a cocked eyebrow.

Ultra Woman suppressed a giggle at that comment. "I'm quite sure he would but I wonder if he would remember to bring the pizza. He seemed a little...distracted by us for some reason."

He looked up at the sky as the 'budda-budda' sound of a helicopter could be heard in the distance. "I will find a place to hide, but you two must hurry, find them before they kill again.."

"The wand is still pulling towards Reichsbourough. We should try to get there as soon as we can," Ultra Girl stated while the magic wand pointed toward the location of the nearest villains.

"Hide? Where?" Rei asked. She was torn between going after the other creatures and allowing Argent to slip away. Something about him told her that he shouldn't be allowed to be running around without somebody to keep an eye on him.

Argent raised his hands up and the silvery white glow against began to encompass him. "I will be able to track those two items, so fear not. They are magicked so that if you need me, you need only touch them together, and I will come to your assistance. Do not do so frivolously, the magic within them is brittle, and too many summonings could damage them beyond repair."

"So we shouldn't summon you unless we're in REALLY big trouble?" Ultra Girl asked.

Rei was just about to say something when...

With a flash of light that signaled the location to the helicopter as well as most everyone in the neighborhood, Argent disappeared.

"Hades!" she muttered. "I do hate it when he does that!" She saw that the helicopter was swing towards them and she didn't feel like answering a bunch of silly questions right now. Rei turned to Julia and asked, "Since he vanished perhaps we should as well? The police have questions but we have work to do." She turned to look in the direction of Reichsbourough as if she could see the battle they would be in for.

"Yes, hopefully the next being from Argent's world isn't too far away," Julia replied as she prepared to leap to the next rooftop in the direction of the wand's pull. "I guess it would be to much to ask for the next villain to be a lot less powerful than the first two?" she asked rhetorically.
