Chapter 1 The Assignment

MODESTY blaise crossed her long legs and inhaled slowly, allowing the smoke from her cigarette to fill her lungs, and then blew it out in a long controlled exhalation. Across from her the rugged face of one of her visitors creased in a frown. “Them damn things will kill ye, ye know,” he growled.

Beside the man, her other visitor smiled. “Rawlins has been on about tobacco ever since the latest article in Lancet describing the dangers of lung cancer.”

Modesty allowed the cigarette to dangle loosely from her fingers, but she made no effort to put it down. “I had no idea you were interested in medical manners Mr. Rawlins.”

“He is amazingly well-read,” Sir Gerald Tennant commented, “however we did not come here to discuss the matter of your health, precious as that is to us.”

Modesty inhaled again and glanced at the fourth man in the room. “No I don’t expect you did. Willie and I were speculating on what intriguing proposal you might have for us.”

“Ah yes,” Tarrant replied, setting down his brandy. “I suppose I should get to the point.”

“Please do,” Modesty prompted. Stubbing out her cigarette, she looked toward Rawlins. “Another whiskey, Mr. Rawlins?”

“Please, miss,” he answered and held out his glass while Modesty poured.

Tarrant cleared his throat. “What do you know of Tibet, Miss Blaise?”

“It was invaded by the Chinese in 1950 and subjected to a systematic destruction of its culture beginning with the imprisonment and execution of thousands of Buddhist monks, and the destruction of hundreds of monasteries including the Potala. Since that time the Chinese have begun a program of colonization to absorb the native Tibetans and have forbidden use of the Tibetan language in schools and other institutions. All foreigners are excluded from the region.”

“Ahem,” Tarrant said. “I see you know considerably more than the average citizen. That is good. The more you know the better.”

“Let me guess,” Willie Garvin cut in. “You want me ‘n the princess to drop in there on some damned foolish errand for MI-5.”

The speaker was powerfully built, standing over six feet tall with blond hair mixed with a touch of grey. He was hunched forward as he spoke, his fingers toying with the glass in his hand and his expression was not exactly friendly.

“It’s alright, Willie,” Modesty said. “Let’s hear what Sir Gerald has to say.”

“Well,” Tarrant said. “I am afraid Mr. Garvin has it exactly right. Although I wouldn’t call it a damned fool errand.”

“Why me?” Modesty asked. “I might know a little bit about Tibet, but my knowledge of Chinese is minimal and I know nothing of the Tibetan language. I would think those would be a serious consideration for any agent.”

“Actually your knowledge of Russian might be more useful in this case. And your considerable athletic skills are certainly an asset. We have agents who speak Chinese, but ten seconds of exertion on the Tibetan Plateau would leave them so physically exhausted they’d require a day to recover.”

“In that case I suppose the next question is why should I be even remotely interested in getting involved in this mission?”

Tarrant looked at the beautiful woman who had just spoken. She was well worth looking at and he always enjoyed the opportunity to look into her dark eyes while not appearing to gawk at her well-shaped breasts which today were modestly covered by a tight-fitting high-necked white cashmere pullover.

Her ebony hair was cut close to her head and fitted to the curve of her elegant neck. Her ears were pierced with a pair of gold earrings set with white opals. Her lips were tinted the lightest of reds, drawing attention to their fullness, but not distracting the eye from her pert nose, high cheekbones, and finely arched brows.

She sat, almost regally, in a chair of dark leather, showing a good deal of her long, well- shaped thighs before they disappeared into a tight black leather skirt. A wide belt of linked gold rings girdled her supple waist and a pair of white slippers covered her feet. Tarrant could see that her skin was lightly tanned, giving her an overall healthy, almost robust, aura.

Tarrant cleared his throat and sipped at his brandy before answering. “I thought you might like a little fun in addition to the fact that what I have in mind ties in with one of your interests.”

“I usually manage to arrange my own fun, Sir Gerald,” Modesty smiled, “but go on. What interest of mine could possibly tie in with one of your enterprises?”

“Have you heard of the “Heart of Tibet?”

“I have,” Modesty replied, her face showing a slight glimmer of curiosity. “It is reputed to be a ruby of enormous size. Supposedly it was set into the forehead of the largest Buddha in the Potala, but viewed only by the monks who served the monastery. But no one has seen it since the invasion. It disappeared during the Chinese sacking of Tibet and was thought to be lost or even worse, sold to gem merchants who had it cut into smaller stones.”

“We have it on the best authority that it and a number of similar gems were pried from the settings and secreted away by the monks who guarded them, and that they are still hidden somewhere in Tibet.”

“Now let me guess,” Modesty said. “Somehow you have learned of their location and want me and Willie to go looking for them.”

“Well, yes and no,” Tarrant answered. “We would like you to go after them, but first there is another obstacle to overcome.”

Modesty did not respond, waiting for Tarrant to fill her in. After another sip at his brandy he continued. “Have you heard of Alexei Kozlov?”

“The Russian defector who first betrayed his country and then went on to a glorious career smuggling arms and forcing young women into sexual servitude? Yes I have heard of him. He is apparently a very nasty piece of work.”

“Yes, that is the man,” Tarrant confirmed. “We have learned that he is here in London and has somehow managed to acquire the location of the missing horde of gems.”

“I see,” Modesty said. “Is that where my knowledge of Russian comes in? You want me to approach him? Why not simply have someone like Mr. Rawlins deal with him?”

“Actually we tried that. But Kozlov is playing a devious game. He is apparently offering his knowledge of the location of the gems to the highest bidder. He is currently offering his information to several governments, including the Chinese, intending to sell to the highest bidder. Unfortunately, my budget does not come close to matching what he is asking.” Tarrant leaned forward. “What we would like you to do, is to retrieve the information showing the location of the missing gems and then use that to travel to Tibet and hunt them down.”

That seems like a lot of effort for pile o’ rocks,” Willie Garvin suddenly interjected. “What makes ‘em so important?”

“As gemstones nothing,” Tarrant answered. “But as symbols of Tibetan resistance they would be of immense value. Think of them as the equivalent of the English crown jewels. They have incredible national significance.”

“Gottcha,” Willie said, easing back into his chair. “But I got one more question.” He nodded toward Modesty. “What’s in it for the princess here?”

“I hoped someone would ask that question,” Tarrant answered. “Among the hidden gems are a large number of uncut gems, many of high quality. I don’t expect anyone would notice if a few of them went missing.” He looked at Modesty gauging her reaction.

The beautiful woman’s expression did not change, but Tarrant knew he had caught her interest. After a number of years “acquiring” precious stones and reselling them, Modesty had turned her attention to the art of lapidary and stone-cutting. She was an expert artisan and her amateur creations rivaled the work of the finest jewelers anywhere in the world.

“Still seems a bit much for the princess to risk her life for,” Garvin stated.

“I agree,” Mr. Garvin,” Tarrant replied. “But there is one more minor thing.”

“And what would that be?” Garvin asked.

“Kozlov paid a small fortune for the information describing the location of the hidden gems. It’s left him a little short of cash. If he were to suffer a setback it might put a real dent in his organization, especially in his operations dealing with the procurement of young women for the sex trade.”

He didn’t look toward Modesty as he answered, but he could sense the impact of his words on her. The room was suddenly very quiet.

Tarrant got to his feet and looked toward the silent Modesty. “Thank you for your hospitality Miss Blaise. I’ll leave you to consider my offer. If you decide in my favour then you need only contact Mr. Rawlins. You have his number.”

Modesty nodded wordlessly and rose also. “Yes, Sir Gerald. It has been nice seeing you again. I’ll think about what you have said.” She watched as Willie Garvin escorted the two men to her private elevator.

YOU’RE a bloody master, Sir Gerald. I think you’ve got her hooked,” Rawlins said as the elevator descended. “That was a nice bit about the sex trade. Seemed to have struck a nerve there.”

“It wasn’t as hard as you might think,” Tarrant replied.

“How so?”

“I know Modesty Blaise. She is a bit of an enigma, but she is a woman who has spent years living on the edge. I expect that she has been left with an unquenchable thirst for adventure. She hides it well now that she is in supposed retirement, but a life of polishing and setting stones won’t satisfy her. I’ve just given her a little incentive to return to a life of intrigue and excitement. You can expect that phone call once she has waited a decent interval.”

“I never would have considered that,” Rawlins said.

“That is why I am Sir Gerald and you are Mr. Rawlins,” Tarrant grinned.

Chapter 2 The Break-in

MODESTY stubbed out her cigarette and nodded to Willie. “Time to go,” she muttered.

“Right, princess,” Garvin answered. He stepped out of the nondescript Bedford delivery van he had parked across from the luxury townhouse occupied by Alexei Kozlov.

Most of the lights in the townhouse were now dim, indicating that Kozlov and his guests had finally turned in. Modesty and Willie had been watching the townhouse for a week and on no occasion had the activity in the townhouse died down until after four am. Fortunately, the long winter nights meant that they still had about three hours before daylight, however, by that time the servants might be up. It didn’t give them much time, but it would have to do.

Modesty followed Willie across the street, her uniformly dark clothing causing her to blend into the shadows. She was dressed in dark, tight-fitting trousers that hugged her figure, and a black pullover and hood that covered the upper part of her body. Black climbing boots covered her feet. Around her waist was a pouched tool belt.

The way to the back of the building led through a narrow alley; so narrow that passage was possible only on foot, but it had its advantages. It created a narrow shaft next to the neighbouring building that allowed Modesty a way up by pressing her feet and hands against the two buildings and ascending it like a sort of chimney. While Willie waited below, she made her way to the roof. Once there she tiptoed across the roof to a large skylight.

It took her only seconds to cut an opening through the glass, but before she turned the catch to open the skylight, she placed an electrical contact across the circuits of the alarm to keep it from going off. Only then did she swing the skylight back. She paused before entering, listening for any movement below. Attaching a line to the window’s metal casement she lowered herself into the room below.

The room showed considerable evidence of heavy drinking, with a number of open bottles adorning tables, along with plates of partly eaten food, and full ashtrays; however, it was empty of revelers. If Rawlins was right the room she wanted was just off this one, down a short hall. She stepped in the direction she had memorized.

Only a single light illuminated the hallway, but she had no difficulty finding her way to the door at the end of the hall. To her right was another room from which came the sound of voices. It wasn’t the ideal situation. If anyone opened the door she would almost certainly be discovered, however, she didn’t have much choice if she was to take advantage of the opportunity provided.

Quickly she took out her lock picks from one of her belt pouches and with a deft touch opened the lock in just seconds. Then, turning the door handle she eased the door open and slipped inside. It was pitch dark in the room, and she stood and listened for a second before taking out her tiny flashlight. According to Rawlins there were two safes in the room, one hidden behind a picture that was intended as a decoy and another beneath the thick Persian rug in the centre of the room.

The room appeared to be a combination of office and library, with a large desk over by windows that ran from floor to ceiling, but which were now covered by heavy drapes. Bookcases took up two of the other walls. Careful to avoid stumbling over a low table and several comfortable chairs that were set in various parts of the room, she made her way top the corner of the rug closest to the window and then rolled it back. As Rawlins had stated, there was a safe set into the floor and it was of a fairly modern design. This was going to be a bit of a challenge.

She set out her tools, the most important of which was a sensitive electronic stethoscope Modesty herself had designed. It was sensitive enough to pick up the sound of a pin striking a concrete floor thirty yards away and she had to hope it would enable her to hear the tumblers of the safe as they fell into place.

She had the first tumbler in five minutes and the second in eight. But then a noise in the hall disturbed her. She arose all in a single motion, scooping up her safecracking gear and flipping the rug back into place as a voice sounded outside the door to the room. It had a distinctly Russian accent. “Just a minute, I think I’ve got an extra one in the library.” There was the sound of a key in the lock and then an exclamation. “What the hell? This door should be locked.”

Modesty moved quickly, her hand grasping the palm-width hardwood kongo Willie had carved for her. It was a barbell-shaped object that fit perfectly into her hand. Used properly against the body’s pressure points or other vulnerable areas it could injure or even kill. She hoped, however, that she would not have to use it. Violence during a burglary was generally not conducive to success, especially when the victim was in communication with someone else. And there were guards stationed around the townhouse. She and Willie had counted a half dozen of them. The last thing she wanted to be involved in was a shootout. It always made things so messy.

The door opened and the lights went on. Behind the drapes Modesty stilled her breathing and waited. She could imagine Kozlov or whoever it was sweeping his eyes around the room. The drapes were an obvious hiding place and she expected them to be pulled aside any second, but nothing happened. Then there was a muffled curse. “Idiot! The voice muttered. I’m just getting too damned careless.”

Footsteps moved toward the desk. There was the sound of a drawer sliding open and then being pushed shut, and then the footsteps headed back toward the door. The lights went off and the door opened and closed and a key turned in the lock. Modesty breathed a sigh of relief. She had been too long out of this game. She should have known to relock the door once she was inside. She was damned lucky that the man who had entered had been more intent on fetching whatever he came for than making sure the room was properly secured.

Quickly she returned to the rug and the safe. With two tumblers already in place it took her just five more minutes to discover the other two and open the safe. Inside was a large manila envelope. She took it out and gave it a quick look. What was in the envelope was written in a several languages. Two of them, Russian and German, she could read; the other was an oriental script she supposed was Tibetan. It didn’t matter. There was enough that she could understand to know that Rawlins had gotten his information right once again. She tucked the envelope into her pullover and closed the safe, covering it with the rug once again and then moved to the door.

She listened. There was not the slightest sound from the hallway. With the utmost care she once again picked the lock and then slowly opened the door upon the deserted hallway. She headed back toward the living room. The easiest way out was the way she had come in. There was no point in accidentally coming upon one of Kozlov’s guards. The living room door was closed. She opened it and stepped directly into a semicircle of firearms.

Modesty froze. She couldn’t do much else. She might have been able to take out one or two opponents, but there were six guns trained on her and none was more than five feet away. In the centre was a rather suave-looking man who was so neatly attired it was hard to believe that he had probably been up all night. “Well,” he said, stroking his pencil-thin mustache, they are making burglars so much more attractive these days.” He motioned with his gun. “Please put up your hands.” Modesty recognized the voice. It was the same one she had heard in the library. She could only suppose that she was looking at Alexei Kozlov.

Modesty slowly raised her hands. One of the other men moved forward and gave her a thorough pat-down, moving his hands over almost every part of her body and discovering everything she had concealed on her body including the envelope. Modesty endured it because she had to, but it was a degrading experience. She could only hope that it did not go any farther than that.

Kozlov’s eyes widened at the sight of the envelope. He snatched it from the hands of his henchman and gave Modesty a chilling look. “How did you know to find this? And who told you what it was?”

Modesty said nothing, keeping her features perfectly composed, but inside her guts were churning. Nothing was more frightening than to be at the mercy of others, especially a man as ruthless as Kozlov was reputed to be. But she knew that if she showed fear, it would just make matters worse.

Kozlov smiled. “You are a cool one. I don’t suppose you will tell me who you are either. But never mind. I will eventually find out everything.” He turned to his henchmen. “Tie her up and take her to the interrogation room. I will be there shortly.”

Modesty’s arms were pulled behind her. She suppressed a gasp as she was bound. The ropes cut tightly into her wrists and her elbows were pulled painfully together, pulling her shoulders back and thrusting her breasts forward. She could not help noticing the direction of her captor’s eyes as they took each of her arms and led her from the room.

The “interrogation room” proved to be in the middle floor of the three story penthouse. It was windowless and Modesty noted that the door was several inches thick and padded on the inside. If there was any screaming no one outside the room was likely to hear anything. Cold chills ran down her spine and a hollow feeling settled in her stomach. Inside the room there was a sturdy wooden table, two chairs, a wall cupboard, and not much else. It was illuminated by a couple of ceiling lights and looking up she saw that there were two heavy eye bolts set into a heavy roof beam.

She waited in silence, while the two henchmen eyed her speculatively. Neither spoke much, but their cold perusal of her breasts and loins left little doubt as to what they were thinking.

Kozlov returned quickly, apparently having returned the envelope to its hiding place. As he entered, Modesty felt her fear increase. The smile on his face did nothing to hide the sense of menace emanating from him.

He stood about six inches taller than her, but he lacked the bulk of her companion, Willie Garvin, and he had nothing of Willie’s rough boyish charm. He reminded Modesty of a snake in a Saville Row suit; elegantly dressed, but incredibly menacing. He stepped within a foot of her and raising his hand to her chin tilted her head back and looked into her eyes.

“I want information,” Kozlov said, “but let me assure you I am in no hurry to get it. Eventually you will tell me everything you know, but while I get the information I intend to enjoy myself fully.”

Modesty resisted the urge to spit. He was so close to her, she could smell the brandy on his breath, but she knew such a pathetic act of defiance would do little to improve her situation. Somewhere outside the building Willie Garvin would have determined that she was in trouble. If she could just hold Kozlov off long enough he might get her out of this mess. She swallowed and lowered her eyes, pretending submission. “W… What do you want to know?” she quavered.

WILLIE Garvin watched Kozlov’s apartment from a nearby rooftop. Modesty was long overdue. Even given the fact that she might have had trouble locating and breaking into the safe she should still have returned. It was a complete violation of normal procedure, and that meant only one thing. Something had gone seriously wrong. “Bloody ‘ell,” he muttered. He would have to go in after her. But if Modesty had been taken prisoner it was far too dangerous to attempt to follow the route she had taken. Kozlov’s guards would have to be complete wankers not to be watching for another attempt. And it was now dawn. Attempting to break into the building in broad daylight was simply too dangerous. “Bloody ‘ell,” he repeated. What was he going to do?”

“OH NO,” Kozlov said. “You’re not going to buy me off with some helpless little girl act. You are far more than you seem, and I am going to find out exactly what.”

Modesty shook her head. She spoke in desperation. “I’m not holding back anything. This was just a break-in that went wrong.”

“You must think I am a complete fool,” Kozlov replied. “You broke in here and went straight to the most valuable item in my possession, while ignoring every other object of value. You are going to tell me who you are and who sent you; and where you got your information. You are not the clumsy amateur you would like me to think you are, although it was careless of you to think I would not detect the odour of the fine Cuban tobacco on your clothing. I knew where you were hiding as soon as I entered the room. No one is allowed in there except me and I don’t smoke.”

So that was it. Now Modesty knew how Kozlov had discovered her. She took a deep breath. Kozlov’s intention was clear. Nothing she said was going to deter him from doing what he wanted with her. She racked her brain to think of some way of distracting him, but could think of nothing.

“Hold her,” Kozlov ordered. “It’s time I found out exactly what I have caught.”

Two of the guards pulled her back until her backside was against the table and then Kozlov reached into his pocket and pulled out a stiletto. With a click the blade shot into place and Kozlov held it to her throat. Modesty held absolutely still, but Kozlov had no intention of cutting her. He turned the blade and slipped it between her skin and the neck of her sweater.

Modesty tried to break away, but the two men held her tight while Kozlov slit her pullover from her neck to her navel. Underneath she was wearing only a thin cotton undershirt. The stiletto flicked again cutting through that as well. Breathing heavily, Modesty looked Kozlov in the eye as he and his men stared at her breasts and the brief brassiere that covered them.

For a few moments Kozlov toyed with her, placing the point of the stiletto against her flat belly as if he was going to cut her open, but then he moved the point upward, tracing a thin red line over her skin until he reached the junction of the cups of her bra and then cut through the connecting strap.

Her breasts fell free, revealing their beautifully rounded contours and perfect copper tinted nipples. It was her worst nightmare coming true. She closed her eyes. There was only one way to retreat from his horror. She fainted dead away.

It was a neat little trick, and one she had used under similar circumstances. When the fear of what was going to happen to her became overwhelming she simply withdrew from the conscious world. However, Kozlov was having none of it.

“Clever,” he muttered as Modesty slumped into unconsciousness. “But let’s see how long you can hold your breath.” He sheathed the stiletto and clamped his hand over Modesty’s lips and then with the other hand pinched her nostrils shut.

Modesty moaned as her oxygen supply was cut off. Her breasts heaved as she struggled to breathe and then suddenly, her eyes popped open and she wrenched her head in an attempt to free her mouth and nose.

Kozlov let her break away and stood grinning as she gasped for breath, her breasts quivering. “I don’t think you’ll try that again. Now where was I?” He moved forward and cupped her firm flesh, rubbing each nipple with his thumbs.

Modesty tried to move away, but with her back arched due to the way she was bound, and the heavy table against her buttocks there was no way she could escape Kozlov’s fondling. She winced as his fingers painfully squeezed her breasts and twisted her nipples. “Do you like that?” Kozlov taunted. “I hope so, because you’re going to get a lot more of it.” Suddenly he stepped back and motioned to another of his henchmen. “Take off her pants and shoes.”

Modesty renewed her efforts to escape, but could do nothing as the remainder of her clothing was removed leaving her clad in only the remnants of her pullover and vest, and a thin pair of panties. She stood there panting in fear, her body trembling as she strained her muscles in an attempt to escape. She succeeded only in exciting Kozlov. He moved forward and with a single tug tore off her silk panties, revealing the dark fleecy triangle that framed her public mound.

“Bastard,” Modesty gasped while she struggled in the grips of the two men that held her and then watched in growing terror as Kozlov began to undress, removing his jacket and shirt, and then his shoes and pants.

By now her silken skin was covered in sweat, and her continual efforts to break free had her chest heaving from exertion. In spite of her attempt to remain calm, she was close to going into hysterics and it took all of her self control not to start babbling for mercy. Nothing she said would change Kozlov’s mind, and her pleas for mercy would simply give him that much more pleasure.

Kozlov stood naked before her. He was surprisingly well-muscled and his swelling erection terrified her, bringing back forgotten memories of the time when, still a child, she had been brutally raped. It was something she had told to no one and she kept the memories repressed, buy at times like this all of the pain of that terrifying experience came rushing back.

“No, you can’t do this,” she gasped as Kozlov took out a jar of KY jelly and lubricated his engorged member. She struggled desperately, holding back a scream as the two men holding her bent her back onto the table.

Kozlov moved between her legs, and then bent, hooking his elbows under each of her knees and then forced her legs up and back, spreading them wide. “I think you will see that I can,” Kozlov said in reply to her protests. He shifted his weight forward, bringing his lubricated phallus in contact with Modesty’s womanhood.

Modesty grunted as he entered her, fighting him every step of the way. She clenched her vaginal muscles; an action that all of her lovers had found most pleasurable, but in this case intended to deny Kozlov entry. It had the opposite effect. “God, you’re tight,” Kozlov groaned. He used his weight to force his way into her, driving in to the full length of his shaft. It was then that Modesty screamed.

It was not the pain of what was being done to her, but the sheer horror of being taken against her will and the flood of past memories surging into her mind. It crushed her will to resist, reducing her to state of hysteria that had her writhing in fear as Kozlov raped her. She screamed again as he bit her breasts and shoulders, his teeth leaving visible marks on her skin.

Kozlov finally erupted inside her and then stepped back, breathing heavily from his exertions. “Not so damned tough after all were you?” he said to the moaning woman. Now it’s time to find out what you know.”

Modesty’s loins ached. Although Kozlov had used a sexual lubricant the brutality of the rape had shattered her. Her vagina burned and her vulva was badly bruised where Kozlov had forced his way in. Her breasts throbbed where he had mauled and bitten them, his teeth breaking the skin in several places. But even worse was the humiliation of what had been done to her. She dared not raise her head for fear of meeting the eyes of one of her captors. She would almost certainly have burst into tears. And then there was the terrifying knowledge that Kozlov was just getting started on her.

“String her up.” The words alerted her to the next part of her ordeal.

She first was lifted up and pushed face down on the table and then her wrists and elbows were untied. She whimpered in pain as the blood rushed back into her fingers. Each of them was swollen to the size of a sausage and throbbed agonizingly as circulation returned. Then leather cuffs were strapped to her wrists and ropes attached to metal rings on the cuffs. The ropes were threaded through the eyebolts in the overhead beam, and she was pulled into a standing position with her arms over her head and her toes barely touching the ground.

Kozlov had replaced his clothing and now stood before her, a smirk on his face. “Now that we have had the pleasure now we will have the pain. At least pain for you. We will begin with your name and then proceed from there.”

Modesty said nothing. She could feel Kozlov’s semen dribbling down the inside of her thigh. The shame of being captured and violated permeated every part of her consciousness. She had paid a high price for her carelessness, but she would tell Kozlov nothing for as long as she could hold out. Properly applied torture could break anyone and she knew that she was no exception, but she had disgraced herself enough. She would give away nothing without a fight. She clenched her jaw as Kozlov picked up a heavy leather strap and moved behind her.

“Now my mysterious beauty,” Kozlov said, “you are going to tell me everything you know.” He pulled back his arm and then swung the strap.

WILLIE Garvin had made up his mind. It was almost noon. Modesty was overdue by six hours. Anything could have happened to her by now. She might even be dead, but if she was not there was no telling what Kozlov might do to her. He checked his small arsenal of knives, slipped one into the palm of his hand, and moved toward the entrance to the townhouse.

A uniformed doorman watched as he mounted the steps. “Yes?” he asked.

Willie noted the complete absence of politeness in the doorman’s greeting, but then he was not exactly dressed for a proper visit, wearing dark trousers, and a black leather jacket more suited for work in a back alley than anything else. However, that was just as well. He had no time for niceties. Since he had decided to go in through the front door, speed, not decorum was the most important factor.

Six inches of steel suddenly appeared at the doorman’s throat. “I’d like the door open, mate, if you don’t mind. And then get the ‘ell out of me way.”

The doorman’s face quickly lost its superior expression. He backed up hurriedly and pulled the door aside. Willie pushed past him without a second glance. No doubt the police would be summoned within minutes, but that was the least of his concerns. Entering the lobby he headed straight for the concierge. “Which lift goes to the top floors?” He was careful to let the uniformed man see the blade of the knife although he probably didn’t even need that. One look at his face would have frightened most people.

“It’s around back,” the man stammered, his eyes fixed on the blade.

“Take me,” Willie ordered.

The man came slowly out from behind the desk. “I’ve got a wife and family,” he quavered.

“Then you’ll best be careful not to get me stirred up,” Willie growled.

The man hurried ahead of him. “There’s a guard,” he warned as they neared a door at the back of the lobby.

“Thanks, mate,” Willie said. He pushed the man behind him. “Go back to your desk. I’ll find me own way from ‘ere.”

He had no idea why the concierge had warned him Probably out of fear of getting hurt in a confrontation, but in any case it did not matter. Willie knew that he was likely to meet one of Kozlov’s henchmen sooner or later.

He opened the door and had the knife to the man’s throat before he had time to draw his gun. “I’ll just take this,” he said, reaching inside the man’s jacket and extracting his weapon. It was a Beretta NATO model 1951. He tucked it into his pocket. Modesty might have a use for it.

He motioned toward the elevator while keeping the knife pressed against the man’s jugular. “Where’s the girl? And don’t try and tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

The guard rolled his eyes. “Girl?” he asked.

Willie pressed the knife hard enough to draw blood. “Last chance. I expect I can find someone else who’ll tell me.”

“She’s in the interrogation room,” the man winced, trying very hard not to move.

“Now you have twenty seconds to tell me how to get there,” Willie replied.

Willie left the man in a heap. He doubted he would stay that way for long, but if he didn’t find Modesty within the next fifteen minutes he doubted that it would matter. In the sort of crude approach he was using now speed was essential. Finesse was something that would have to be set aside. However, there was still no reason why he could not use every weapon at his disposal.

As the lift rose toward the floor the guard had described he took out a couple of small white tubes and pushed one up each nostril and then he placed a set of tight-fitting goggles over his eyes. The lift shuddered to a halt and Willie pulled the handle that parted the doors. As he did so he tossed a small cylindrical object into the corridor beyond the doors. There was a loud “pop” followed by a cloud of white gas and then he stepped into the corridor.

Two of the guards were already on their knees the others were grasping at their throats. One who was farther away was grabbing for his gun. Willie’s knife pinned his hand to his chest. The man screamed, inhaling a lungful of the white gas, and collapsed to the floor with the others, coughing violently. But Willie was already moving down the hall toward the room the guard had described. The gas was acrid, intended to irritate the eyes and lungs, but harmless in the amounts the cylinder contained. It was also anesthetic, and strong enough to incapacitate the men who had breathed it long enough to finish what he had come to do.

He found the door to what he hoped was the interrogation room. He didn’t bother with the lock. He hammered it with his booted foot smashing it wide open. What he saw inside had him seething in rage.

Modesty hung in the centre of the room, her body crisscrossed with welts from the leather belt one of men inside was holding. Willie had to hold himself in check to proceed with the calm precision he needed to deal with the three men in the room. In spite of his surprise entrance, they were already reaching for their guns. He took the two henchmen down with a knife to each of their throats. For the third man he reserved something a little special.

He alone seemed to be unarmed, but that did not save him. As he backed away Willie caught up with him and resorted to brute strength to deal with him. The man must have had some martial training as he attempted to turn Willie’s attack against him, but Willie had been in too many fights to be taken that way. In mid-step he shifted his weight and used his considerable strength to lift his opponent off his feet; then he slammed his fist into the man’s face. There was a crunch of breaking bone, but Willie did not stop. He hit him again, spreading the man’s nose across his face and then let him slump to the ground.

He left him there. He had something far more important to attend to. Climbing onto the table he released Modesty’s wrists from the straps that suspended her from the ceiling and then he lowered her to the table top. She was still conscious and panting in pain, but she made only one sound as he held her.

“What took you so long?” she whispered. And then she fainted.

“NO,” WILLIE insisted. “The princess ain’t receivin’ any visitors just yet. But she told me to let you know that she’ll receive you in a day or so. You will be contacted.”

“I understand,” Tarrant replied. “I just thought I should come as an indication of my concern.”

They two men stood in the sitting room of Modesty’s opulent penthouse. She was nowhere in sight, but Sir Gerald had been allowed to come up to the penthouse to deliver his message in person.

“It’s nothing for you to be concerned about,” Willie replied. “The princess is just a little under the weather. She’ll be right in a few days.”

“I just want to assure you that we have dealt with the police. There will be no investigation into the incident at Kozlov’s townhouse, especially not with the evidence of the large amount of criminal activity that was found there. We convinced them that the violence was some form of gangland retribution.”

“I’m not sure what you’re on about,” Willie said. “It’s nothing to me or the princess what a bunch of wankers do to each other.”

“Ah, no. Of course not,” Sir Gerald replied. “May I enquire as to whether or not you had any luck in discovering the whereabouts of the document that was in Kozlov’s possession?”

“You may enquire, Sir Gerald. And you will be told when me and the princess gets some information of that. Now if you don’t mind I got a few things to look into.”

“Yes, of course, Mr. Garvin. Thanks you for your hospitality. I will be going now. Please contact me when you have any further information.”

“THANKS, Willie,” Modesty said as the elevator doors closed on Tarrant. “That was nicely done. I didn’t really feel up to receiving visitors today.”

Willie looked up. Modesty stood in the doorway that led to her suite. She was dressed only in a green Japanese-motif dressing gown, belted at the waist with a crimson sash. On her feet were matching slippers. She had one had on the door frame as if she was using it to help support her. He was surprised that the princess was able to walk so soon after her ordeal. He expected that she must be in considerable pain. However, pretending that she was alright was her way of dealing with what had been done to her, and so he did not caution her. “Would you like a cuppa?” he asked.

“That would be nice. Would you mind bringing it to my room?”

“You got it, princess,” Willie said as he headed toward the kitchen. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Modesty turn and move slowly back the way she had come.

“WELL?” Rawlins asked as Tarrant seated himself in the seat of the Rolls.

“They’ve got the document,” Tarrant replied. “They’re just not admitting to it right now. I’m sure Miss Blaise will let us know eventually.”

“What about the rumors that Kozlov raped and brutalized her?”

“I think they will have to remain just rumours. Three men dead and Kozlov with his testicles stuffed down his throat. Ugly business that. The less we say about it the better.”

“Right,” Rawlins replied as he steered the Rolls into the London fog.

Chapter 4 The Reunion

“UGGHN!” Modesty grunted as Rawlins thrust into her. He had bent her face down over a packing case and was enjoying her from behind, alternating between taking her vaginally and anally. Her wrists were bound tightly behind her and she could not offer the least resistance.

With a groan of satisfaction Rawlins heaved himself off Modesty’s exhausted body. Every part of her hurt, from her bruised backside and tormented breasts to her burning vagina. True to his word Rawlins had spent the best part of the last three days “shagging” her as he put it in every possible position he could think of.

“Modesty, darling,” Rawlins panted. “I’d like to keep this up. But I’ve a rendezvous to keep. The Chinese await, and I don’t want to chance a sudden storm closing the pass.”

He had taken to calling her Modesty rather than Miss Blaise. After all, as he had pointed out, they were hardly strangers anymore. By now Rawlins knew every part of her body, from her bruised cheekbones and swollen lips, to her inflamed vulva and aching nipples. Rawlins liked his sex a “bit rough” and Modesty was in no position to deny him anything that he wanted. However, it was with mixed feelings that she heard Rawlins announce that they would soon be moving out. She doubted that the nightly sessions would end and so far Rawlins had taken the utmost care in ensuring that she did not escape. She doubted that he would be any less careless on the march and every step would take her closer to her appointment with the Chinese.

She watched from her position on the floor of the tent as he pulled on his clothes. “Time to get some sleep,” Rawlins said. “I suggest you try to do the same. We’ve got a bit of a march the next few days.”

Modesty made no effort to answer Rawlins’ mocking comment. Each session with him left her dehydrated and so sore and fatigued she could barely move. In a few minutes the Tibetan woman would show up and help her onto her pallet and cover her with blankets. She would also check her bonds to make sure none of the ropes had worked loose and that there was no danger of her circulation being cut off. If this was noticed Rawlins would be alerted and he would change the position of the ropes, but she was never released and in spite of her best efforts she had never been able to loosen the ropes enough to have the slightest chance of escaping. All she could do was hope that the march to the Tibetan border might give her some opportunity to get away. The only factor in her favour was that Rawlins left her in the tent where the supplies were kept rather than staying with her all night. Being forced to sleep with him in addition to being sexually molested would have been unbearable.

Modesty remained draped over the crate, too done in to even move. In her pain and exhaustion it took her awhile to realize that Rawlins had made a mistake. For the first time since taking her prisoner he had neglected to tie her ankles to her wrists. It was an opportunity she could not pass up. With a moan she moved so that she was in a sitting position. Every movement was agony, but she knew she would have no other chance. Gritting her teeth she forced her bound wrists over her backside and then down her thighs, and over her feet until her hands were in front of her. Then using her strong white teeth she worked at the knots until her wrists were free.

The effort left her almost too done in to stand, but she forced herself to her feet. Something had delayed Hariti, and she dared not waste the opportunity. She pulled her clothes on, ignoring the pain and fatigue that dragged at her body. She finished just as the tent flap was pulled aside.

“WHERE the bloody ‘ell could they have gone?” Willie Garvin muttered to no one in particular. “They can’t just have vanished into thin air.” He looked gloomily over the edge of the 1,000 foot drop that ran next to the track they were on. They had been searching for Modesty and Rawlins for three days, following the track they must have taken, but had found not the faintest sign of either of them. Even when crossing meadowlands that should have yielded good sign they had found not the slightest trace. He turned to Abhik, the guide and head porter. “Is there any other way they could have gone?”

Abhik shook his head. “I know of a few tracks suited only for tahr,” he said, referring to the Himalayan deer that frequented the high ranges. “But I will check with the others.” He went back to the other porters and spoke. A lively discussion ensued for about thirty seconds and then he returned. “Aadesh, says there is another trail, but no one uses it since it takes twice as long to travel and is frequently closed by snow.”

“Right then,” Willie said. “Let’s get on it. Which way is this trail?”

Abhik shrugged apologetically. “A day’s march back the way we came.”

Willie cursed. Why were things never easy?

MODESTY caught Hariti completely off-guard and it was just as well. The mountain woman proved to be tougher than she looked and put up a bit of a struggle before Modesty subdued her. Crouched on the floor, with her hands behind her back Hariti did not realize that Modesty was free until it was too late. The dim light in the tent helped and she was on the woman before she realized what was happening.

Modesty clamped her hand over Hariti’s mouth while at the same time using her weight to bowl her off her feet. The Tibetan woman was wiry and tough, but Modesty outweighed her by a good thirty pounds and she went down with a thump, the impact knocking the wind out of her. Even so she continued to fight even while struggling to breathe. Modesty pinned her down and sought the pressure point on Hariti’s neck that would cut off the blood flow of the carotid artery. She found it and almost instantly the woman went limp.

Modesty released her immediately. There was a fine line between causing unconsciousness and death and she didn’t want to overdo it. Using the same ropes she had been tied with she bound and gagged Hariti and then thought about the next step in her plans.

The brief struggle had pushed to closer to the edge of physical collapse. She knew that she could not hope to take on Rawlins and the men he had hired in her present condition, at least not openly. However, it was very likely that at this time of night most of them would be sleeping. She sat for a minute and then pushed herself to the tent flap. Slowly she pushed her head through the opening and surveyed the camp. A single Sherpa sat before the fire. The others, she guessed were in the other tents.

She needed a weapon, but Rawlins had taken everything from her that might resemble anything threatening. However, Modesty was nothing if not resourceful. Noting that the single sentry’s back was to her she moved silently around to the side of the tent and began to work on one of the tent pegs. It took her a minute or so to work it loose. In her weakened condition she did not hurry, wanting to conserve her strength. She tugged the tent peg free and wrapped her fingers around it. It was not her kongo, but it would do until she got it back.

She continued around the back of the tent, moving silently, feeling with each foot before she put her weight on it. She would take out the lone sentry first and then deal with the others. Just the width of the tent from the sentry she crept forward, every footstep calculated. The tent peg was one foot of hardwood. It was not quite as convenient as her kongo, but it would have to do.

Just before striking she made a small noise. It was enough to cause the sentry’s head to turn, exposing his left temple. The blunt edge of the tent peg slammed into it with brutal precision. The man gave a small grunt and collapsed toward the fire. Modesty reached out and pulled him from the flames, but not for any reason of mercy. Any man that would stand by and let another rape a helpless woman deserved no compassion, but letting him burn would be messy at the very least, and she had seen unconscious men awake screaming when subjected to fire.

She looted the sentry’s body, discovering a World War I vintage Lee-Enfield, a sheath knife and an ammunition pouch. “Better than what I had,” Modesty thought. But she did not intend to shoot her way into the tents of her captors. At least not until she was sure of how many there were. And there was one in particular she wanted to take alive.

She entered the tent closest to her next. This time she used the knife. It packed a bit more weight than the tent peg and had the advantage of a blade in case things started to go wrong. There were three men in the tent and none of them heard a thing as she took them out with the hilt of the knife one after the other. They would have very bad headaches, but they would probably live.

Rawlins tent was the last. Not unexpectedly he slept alone. And he was most surprised to see her. Him she did not render unconscious, but he probably wished she had. One hour and many muffled screams later she left the tent, tossing the bloody knife away from her. Her face blank, she bound the still unconscious porters and then dragged them out of their tent. She couldn’t bring herself to sleep in the tent where Rawlins had raped her, but her nightly activities had drained her of the last of her strength and she was almost out on her feet. Crawling into the tent she barely made it into the blankets before she lapsed into a deep sleep.

SHE AWOKE to screaming. Even so, it was with some effort that she was able to toss aside the blankets and force herself to her feet. If her body had hurt yesterday, it was even worse today. But somehow, some of her strength seemed to have returned. Picking up one of the rifles and making sure that her Berretta was strapped about her waist she cautiously exited the tent.

It was broad daylight and from the position of the sun, about noon. The screaming was coming from the porters she had tied up after rendering them unconscious. Apparently upon awakening, they had found being hogtied somewhat unacceptable and were screaming as loudly as they could to be untied. It didn’t take Modesty long to convince them that nothing of the sort was going to happen. Instead, she made sure that their ropes were secure, and then gathered up enough food and gear to get her back to the place where Rawlins had lured her away from Willie. Without a backward glance she left the camp and headed back the way she had come.

She didn’t go far. She did not have the energy for that. She walked for an hour and then stopped to eat some of the food she had brought with her. Next to rest she needed food, and she soon had a pot on the boil while she munched on a handful of nuts and raisins. After eating she walked down the trail a bit more until she came to a place where she could leave the trail and set up camp. It allowed her to look back the way she had come just in case any of the men she had left behind had decided to follow her. However, she doubted she would be followed. All of the men Rawlins had hired were plainly terrified of her, and she had tossed all of the breech blocks of the rifles over the edge of a cliff expect the one she had kept for herself.

Placing her blankets under a rock overhang she crawled into them and let their warmth lull her to sleep. This time she slept undisturbed.

WILLIE GARVIN gasped for breath in the high atmosphere. He had been pushing himself much too hard and was very close to paying the price of attitude sickness, but he was frantic to close the gap between himself and Rawlins. After backtracking for a day Abhik had found the concealed path leading off the main trail and the place where something had happened between Modest and Rawlins.

To a man who knew about the techniques of ambush the signs could be read like a book. Rawlins’ footprints were directly behind those of Modesty and then there was a clear handprint in the mud of the trail where she had tried to catch herself when she fell. For whatever reason Rawlins had chosen to attack Modesty from behind; and then there were the other five men he had met up with. It was obviously a preplanned abduction and Willie had no problem figuring out at least two of Rawlins’ motives.

He had never liked the way the man had looked at Modesty. Although Rawlins had tried to disguise his interest in Modesty Willie had seen through his disinterested façade. He had seen men look at Modesty that way many times, but most men just looked and managed to keep their lust bridled. He had no idea whether Rawlins was one of those or not. And, of course, there was a simpler motive. MI5 agents were notoriously underpaid. It wouldn’t have taken much to turn Rawlins to the other side. Whatever the reason or reasons, Rawlins had clearly kidnapped Modesty and what he might be doing to her pushed him on to the point of physical collapse.

“Mr. Garvin. You must stop. You kill yourself this way. Then you no find Miss Blaise.”

Willie stopped to stare at Abhik and then nodded. With a grunt he sat down on a nearby rock ledge overlooking the always spectacular mountain scenery. “How far ahead do you reckon they are?”

“Three days,” Abhik said. “But much longer if you get sick.”

Willie swore silently, but Abhik was right. “Right, we’ll rest ‘ere for an hour. But then we’ll push on. We can’t let them get any farther ahead.” One of the Sherpas got a fire going and began to brew up some tea. At this elevation the water boiled at such a low temperature that the tea could be drunk almost straight away. Given his choice Willie would have preferred something else, but he had to admit it was invigorating.

Willie was on his feet before the hour was over, but there was no rushing Abhik. He insisted that they wait until he was sure Willie would not exhaust himself. “You lowlander. Not have lungs like me. Take it easy. Remember Rawlins can go no faster than you.”

“Rawlins can’t go anywhere at all.” Modesty Blaise strode into view, walking down the trail as if she had been out for a recreational stroll.

Willie was moving toward her in an instant. “Princess…” She stopped him with a glance.

“I’m alright, Willie,” Modesty said striding toward him. She didn’t have to say anything more. Modesty would tell him anything he needed to know. But he knew that look.

“Right, princess,” he said. “Would you like a cuppa?”

Chapter 5 Lhasa

WILLIE GARVIN watched as Modesty strode up the path ahead of him. He cursed under his breath at his stupidity in letting her out of his sight. But how was he to know that the man Tarrant had assigned to accompany them would turn out to be little more than a damned pervert? From now on she would stay where he could keep an eye on her.

Of course, he couldn’t tell her that. If there was one thing Modesty hated it was being coddled and he had been forced to disguise his efforts to help her after she returned. Since she would not speak of what had happened he could only guess what Rawlins had done to her, but it didn’t take much imagination to figure it out. She had returned exhausted, and try as she might she could not disguise her obvious fatigue. Knowing she would not accept any help Willie had spoken quietly to Abhik and gotten him to slow the pace. Fortunately there had been a spate of bad weather the day following Modesty’s sudden reappearance and it had given Abhik the excuse to call a complete halt.

The extra two days of rest seemed to have worked physically, but Modesty had remained moody and uncommunicative for more than a week and Willie knew that inside she was tearing herself up, blaming herself for whatever had happened. But in the days after crossing the Tibetan border had she returned to something like her old self. A true professional, Modesty appeared to have put the incident with Rawlins behind her and was once again completely focused on the mission. It was a welcome change, but Willie watched her anyway, watching for any sign that she might need his assistance.

“Fat chance of that, chum,” he muttered as he quickened his pace. Modesty Blaise was the toughest and most resilient woman he had ever known. The chances that she would need his shoulder to cry on were about the same as his chances of being nominated for sainthood, and Willie hadn’t been to church in decades.

Up ahead the lead Sherpa suddenly halted and Willie quickened his pace, moving up to stand beside Modesty. “There it is,” Modesty said. “Now we just have to find our way to the Potala.”

Willie took out his field glasses and tuned in on the massive palace. Even at this distance some of the damage done to the architectural wonder by the invading Chinese could be seen. “Bastards,” he heard Modesty mutter. “There really is nothing worse than ideological fanaticism.”

There was no need for Willie to comment. He handed Modesty the glasses, and stepped back, holding in a sigh of relief. Her remark was the first time she had sounded like her old self since the incident. It was just as well. Tomorrow they would have to find their way to what had once been the residence of the Dalai Lama.

THEY MADE it to the Potala without incident. However, it had not been easy and the skills Modesty and Willie had developed in half a decade of somewhat shadowy activity had been more than useful. The huge palace was, of course, closed to the public, and was watched over by members of the Chinese army.

The Tibetan capital was a depressing place, still displaying the ruins of the Chinese invasion and with more than ample evidence of the communist skills in running an economy. Willy hadn’t seen so many drab and derelict buildings since the last time he had visited East Berlin. “Not much of a place, Princess,” he murmured.

“No,” Modesty agreed, “but it once was.” She nodded toward the Potala, still magnificent in spite of the damage done to it during the Chinese sacking of the palace. It loomed over them, rising hundreds of feet in whitewashed splendour up the mountainside.

It would have been very convenient if they could have walked straight in, but the palace was off limits to the general population and kept that way by the Chinese army. As a result instead of scaling the series of staircases that led into the structure they were going to have to make their way up the steep slope to a point where they could use their climbing gear to scale the walls. Their target was the Red Hill at the very top of the structure. Once there they would use the map they had obtained from Kozlov and attempt to work their way through the maze of rooms until they reached the hiding place of the Heart of Tibet. It would be no easy task. The map was crude at best and they would have to be careful that their penetration of the palace was not detected.

“Let’s go,” Modesty said. “We’ve got six hours before morning and we’ll probably need all of that time.”

It had taken them several hours to move from the outskirts of Lhasa to their present position below the palace. Now they faced a stiff climb in the dark followed by the task of climbing the sheer walls of the palace. It would have been a daunting task in broad daylight. In addition, they were also hampered by the thin air. They would have to rest frequently if they were not to become exhausted. To help them out both Willie and Modesty carried small cylinders of oxygen. It would be enough, they hoped, to enable them to complete their task.

It took them two hours to work their way up the steep brush-covered slope to the base of the wall. There they rested for a half hour before using the small crossbow they had brought to fire a grappling hook to the top of the wall. They had no idea whether or not that particular section would be guarded, but the odds were in their favour that it would not be. The Chinese had no reason to expect that anyone would be desperate enough to actually want to break into the palace and it was unlikely that the walls would be guarded.

Modesty went first, bracing her feet against the wall and walking her way most of the way up. Only near the last few feet did she have to rely completely on the strength of her arms to finish the climb. Reaching the top, she quickly scouted for guards and then jerked on the rope to let Willie know it was safe to follow.

The central area of the Potala, known as the Red Hill loomed before them. It was a massive architectural masterpiece rising almost three hundred feet above the top of the hill. Inside was a complex maze of hundreds of rooms, but it was not any of these that they were seeking. Instead the crudely drawn map indicated that they were to search the ancient foundations of the Red Hill.

It was dangerous. There was no doubt about that. Just getting into Tibet risked being thrown into a Chinese prison. And the Chinese were incredibly patient jailers. They thought nothing of keeping someone in jail for as long as it suited them; even if it meant the victim of incarceration never saw the light of day again.

But it was nothing that Willie and Modesty had not done before. And in this particular enterprise there was something strongly in their favour. The Chinese had no reason to suspect that there was anything of value in the Red Hill. It was guarded, but more to keep out any former monks who might have escaped the Chinese purge of their members; or any of the Buddhist faithful who might seek entry to the holy sites within the palace. They would not be expecting anyone like Modesty or Willie, and as a result once they were past the guards on the outside of the palace there should be no one guarding the long deserted passages that they sought.

“I’m ready, Princess.” Willie said, after Modesty had waited a few minutes to recover his wind after the climb. “Let’s finish this dash-and-grab and get out of ‘ere.”

Modesty nodded and moved silently toward the bulk of the Red Hill, which could now be seen only as a huge black shadow against the night sky. Moving from shadow to shadow so as to avoid any guards who might just happen to be watching, it took half an hour to reach the immense building and then sneak into one of its many entrances. As Modesty had hoped the building was almost deserted and they did not encounter a single guard as they sought the entrance to the lower levels of the palace.

Slowly they worked their way down staircase after darkened staircase. In spite of the danger they were forced to make use of a needle thin light to find their way, but everything went well and another half hour of skulking brought them to the section of the Potala they sought. They were facing a blank wall at the bottom of a staircase deep in the bowels of the palace. “Interesting that no one noticed this stairway went nowhere,” Modesty commented.

“I doubt anyone’s been down ‘ere for a dog’s years,” Willie commented. He took out a hammer and chisel. “Now let’s see how accurate that map is.” Wrapping a length of cloth around the head of the hammer he placed the chisel against the wall and tapped lightly. With a slight crunch the seemingly solid stone gave way, revealing that it was nothing more than thin plaster. “Right, so far so good.” He tapped with the hammer again, driving a line straight down the wall. Within minutes he had cut a hole large enough for him and Modesty to enter.

Modesty bent forward and shone her light into the opening. It revealed little more than blackness. Modesty took a deep breath. “Well, it’s not far now. In half and hour or so we should know if this map is really worth the millions than Kozlov paid for it.”

“Princess,” Willie said quietly, his voice suddenly tinged with alarm. “There’s a light coming down the stairs.”

“Damn,” Modesty whispered. “It can’t be chance. Someone must know we’re here.” Her Berretta was already in her hand.

“Bloody ‘ell, Princess we’re like rats in a ‘ole ‘ere. We’ve got to chance the opening.”

Modesty saw that Willie was right. Trapped at the bottom of the stairs, there was no way to go but toward the descending light, and they were completely at the mercy of anyone at the top of the stairs if it came to a fight. They would have to chance the hidden passage they had found.

“Quickly then,” Modesty urged. She ducked into the dark opening just as the sound of heavy boots on the stairs sounded above them and the light grew brighter.

Inside the hidden passage they found themselves in a long corridor that ran with a definite downward slope as far into the darkness as they could see. With the sounds of pursuit coming closer they had little choice but to push on, but the thought entered Modesty’s mind that if there was no way out then all their pursuers would have to was wait until they ran out of food and water. Sooner or later she and Willie would have to come out.

“Come on,” Modesty said. “We might as well see where this goes.” It was a little bit of desperation. She had studied the map long enough to remember that the particular passage led to another maze of corridors. Down one of them was the hidden cache of gems, but that was little consolation. There was no way out that she could remember.

Behind them they could now hear shouting and then a crash as someone smashed a larger hole in the plaster wall. A light suddenly shone toward them, but by then they were far enough Modesty doubted that they could be seen. Even so, she and Willie both increased their speed.

They passed by the corridor that supposedly led to the hidden treasure. Modesty knew it was a complete dead end. Their only hope was to get into the maze of corridors and lose their pursers in the twists and turns of the labyrinth.

Suddenly there was a burst of automatic weapons fire from behind them. Someone was firing blind into the darkness. Fortunately he aimed high, the bullets ricocheting off the stone ceiling. Nevertheless, Modesty and Willie lost time by diving to the floor.

There was a shouted command in Chinese and the shooting stopped, but the sound of heavy boots thundering through the darkness drove them to their feet again and on down the corridor. With their tiny light barely lighting the way, Modesty and Willie plunged on. They were now beyond what the map had shown and essentially running blind. Neither of them saw the pit until they were stepping into it.

Modesty landed with a thump. By sheer good luck, the pit was no more than five feet deep, but it was a good twelve feet across and the impact with the floor tumbled her across to the other side, knocking the wind out of her. Willie, who was a step or so behind, fell after her and just missed landing his two hundred pounds on top of her. The air went out of him with a “woof” and he lay beside Modesty gasping for air.

The sound of running boots came closer and then several flashlights shone into their eyes, blinding them. Modesty twisted her body, concealing the map, and stuffed it into a crack in the stone floor. Orders were shouted down at them in Chinese and there was little doubt what was being said, but Modesty held onto her pistol until another voice spoke in heavily accented English.

“Throw down your weapons, English. We know who you are. Raise your hands over your head. You have no chance. Do it now or we shoot.”

Modesty let her Berretta drop. With luck no one would find the map. Beside her Willie did the same, however, he made no effort to rid himself of the several knives he had hidden about his person. Their captors, however, were taking no chances. Blinded by the lights, Modesty and Willie squinted up at their captors, but could make out only dim shadows. It was clear, though that they were in a hopeless situation and as a result when the next command came they had little choice but to obey.

“Take off clothes, now. All of them. Do it fast or we shoot.”

After the requisite moment of hesitation both Modesty and Willie slowly began to strip. They dropped each garment at their feet, hoping that somehow their captors would be stupid enough to allow them access to the weapons hidden in various secret pockets, but there was no such luck.

They finally stood clad in nothing but their underclothes, but that was still not enough for the man giving the orders. “All clothes off!”

Reluctantly, Modesty obeyed. She felt the apprehension within her rise as she let her bra drop and then peeled her panties down her long smooth legs. “Now you come over here. Hands over head,” the man commanded.

Felling incredibly vulnerable Modesty did as she was told. She had to consciously focus on controlling her breathing as she stepped to the edge of the pit. Cold metal met her wrists and there were two sharp clicks as the handcuffs were snapped in place. Then hands gripped her wrists and she was lifted from the pit. Once out of the pit she expected the man who had lifted her to let go, but that did not happed. Instead he continued to grip her wrists holding her arms in front of her while another man circled behind her. Then she felt fingers part her buttocks while she was searched in her most intimate places.

“You bastards.” Willie raged. “I’ll ‘ave yer guts for that.”

“It’s alright, Willie,” Modesty said, keeping her voice calm. “There’s nothing we can do.” Completely at the mercy of their captors, Modesty knew that there only chance was to remain calm and wait for any possible chance to escape. Raging at their captors would not help.

Willie knew it too. He immediately shut his mouth and waited for his turn. It came soon enough. Satisfied that Modesty was not concealing anything within her body cavities, she was pulled to one side and forced to her knees under guard, while Willie was hauled from the pit and given the same treatment. At the same time one of the men jumped into the pit and retrieved their clothing.

“You come with us now,” their head captor said. Modesty could see now that he was a big man, towering over his Chinese compatriots. He had short black hair on a bullet head and broad powerful shoulders. Like the rest of his men he was dressed in the drab colours of the Chinese military, his rank distinguish only by two small red stars on his collar.

Modesty and Willie were allowed to get to their feet, but to make sure they did not try anything a rope was tied around each of their necks, connecting them. Modesty was placed in front of Willie and another rope was tied around her neck and held by a man in front. The same thing was done to Willie, only the man who held his rope walked behind. Tethered both front and rear, escape was impossible and in this fashion they were led back the way they had come.

They climbed stair after stair until they reached a part of the palace close to where they had entered. By the time they reached the end of the climb both Modesty and Willie were sweating in spite of their nude condition. But for Modesty there was more to the long climb than the effort it took. Nude and handcuffed, she felt the eyes of her captors upon her. The fact that Willie had been stripped as well did not matter. She doubted very much that his body held the same attraction to their captors as hers did. She could hear murmured comments in Chinese as the men looked her over, and although she could not understand what was being said, their hand gestures said a great deal. It was obvious that they found her pale skin and relatively large breasts interesting and she could not help thinking of what had happened to her before in similar circumstances.

They were marched to a row of what appeared to be monastic cells. One of these was thrown open and Willie was released from the rope and pushed inside. Then the door was slammed shut and a heavy deadbolt thrown. Modesty expected to be put in an adjoining cell, but the officer commanding her captors shook his head. “Not for you. For you we have something special.”

Modesty had to fight back her fear as the officer spoke. The tone was menacing, and clearly intended to intimidate her, but for Modesty even knowing that he was trying to frighten her did not make matters any easier, and her fear rose as she was led off with the officer in the lead. This time with Willie no longer tethered to her she was paraded between two soldiers, one holding a rope in front and another behind. As before, there was no chance to escape and she was marched through the dark corridors of the palace until they entered a medium sized room.

Modesty shuddered as she looked around her. She had seen places where people had been tortured before and this was certainly one of them. Long chains ending in manacles hung from the ceiling and on a shelf against one of the walls was piled what was clearly electrical equipment. There was a table in the middle of the room on which were several short pieces of rubber hose. On another self were several tools; hammers, pliers, and a number of sharp instruments. Several large buckets of water and a large copper tub were neatly lined up in one corner. The floor was stained with what could have been dried blood, feces, or both. It was a gruesome place and it took all of Modesty’s self control not to tremble in fear.

Modesty was herded to the centre of the room where she was allowed to stand and think about what was going to happen to her. Then the big Chinese officer moved over to her. “I am Lieutenant Chow Lien. I am going to tell you what I know and what I don’t know. I know that you are the British criminal, Modesty Blaise. You are wanted by my government for many crimes and I can assure you that you will be tried and punished for them. I also know that you came here to find the hidden treasure called the Heart of Tibet and I know that you had a map to guide you. What I don’t know is where you hid that map. I expected to find it on your person, but it appears that you either hid the map or memorized it and then destroyed it.

Chow paused, apparently to let all of this sink in, then he continued. “You are going to tell me where the map is or if you have memorized it then you are going to escort me to where the treasure is. If you do not I am going to enjoy forcing you to tell me what you know.”

Chow waited, but Modesty said nothing. Chow had pretty well laid it out. He was going to torture her to make her talk. She doubted that there was anything she could say to make him change his mind, and from the way he had spoken and the way his eyes had traveled over her body she knew he was looking forward to it.

“Perhaps you would prefer that I bring your lover in here and let you watch while I torture him. It would be interesting to see how much pain you would let him endure before you cracked.” As he spoke Chow studied her, clearly gauging her reaction. He was looking for the slightest sign of weakness and Modesty gave him none. In spite of her terrifying circumstances and Chow’s continued threats she acted as if nothing he said had the least bit of influence on her. The threat to Willie affected her deeply, but she knew Chow would act on it at once if he thought it was the key to extracting information.

“You are a cold one,” Chow said. “You care nothing for the one you love?”

“You underestimate me,” Modesty finally replied, her tone dripping with contempt. “Do you really think I would place the man I love in danger? Garvin is my employee, nothing else. A hired mercenary. Do what you want to him.”

Chow silently considered her words, and then nodded. “Then it will have to be you. Do you not value your beauty?”

“My beauty does not matter,” Modesty said. “You have threatened me with torture, but have given me no incentive to tell you what I know other than the promise of further punishment. Perhaps if you agreed to free me I might consider trading some information for it.”

“I make no bargains with capitalist criminals,” Chow answered. “You will tell me what I want to know or you will suffer.”

Modesty had drawn out the inevitable as long as possible. She suspected that Chow probably had it in mind to torture her even if she gave in completely. However, at the last second she pretended to break. “Alright,” she said. “I’ll take you to the treasure. But I want my clothes. I’m freezing.”

The look Chow gave her clearly indicated disappointment, but he nodded. “I’ll give you back your shirt and pants. Then you show me.”

It was apparent the lure of finding the fabled treasure was more important than drawing out the event by torturing her and Modesty was allowed to pull on her trousers. However, the handcuffs were not removed and her shirt was draped over her shoulders and the sleeves pulled under her armpits and tied beneath her breasts to keep it on. It was not what Modesty had in mind, but Chow gave her no other option. “Now you show me,” he ordered. He emphasized the point by turning her toward the door and pushing her in the desired direction.

Modesty feigned exhaustion, keeping her pace slow and gasping for breath. All the while she looked for some chance to escape. She had no real plan, she was just looking for any opening that might enable her to catch her captors off guard. However, she also had to be patient and wait until any attempt might have some chance of success. She guessed that the long flights of stairs might offer the best chance and she was proved correct.

As they descended once again into the depths of the palace, Modesty noticed that her guards were strung out single file. But more importantly, they seemed lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that she had offered not the slightest resistance. She was still tethered, with a soldier holding the ropes both front and back, but they had allowed the rope to go slack and no longer appeared to be holding very tight. In addition, the number of escorts had been greatly reduced. There had been over a dozen men present when she and Willie had been taken prisoner. Now there was just Chow and four others. It should have been more than enough to deal with a lone woman, but Modesty hoped to prove that wrong.

She tripped on the bottom step as she neared one of the landings. Tensing her neck muscles and ignoring the pain of the rope as it tightened about her throat, she jerked the rope from the hands of the man following her. The man let out a curse and tried to recover it, but Modesty was already moving. The slow pace she had been allowed to set had allowed her to recover much of her strength and she launched herself at the two men in front of her.

She struck the closest man in the chest with both of her fists, knocking him from the landing and driving him into the man below him. They both toppled backward in a tangle of limbs, tumbling down several of the stone steps. Modesty was already moving in the other direction, tackling the men above her before they had a chance to use their weapons. Stupidly the guard nearest her had grabbed for the rope instead of drawing his gun. Since Modesty was leaping toward him that proved to be a useless acquisition. She reached out, caught the cuffs of his trousers and jerked hard, yanking his legs out from under him. He slammed down hard on the steps his head cracking like a coconut. Even before he finished falling Modesty was darting past him toward the fourth guard. This man had time to draw his pistol, but he had not time to pull the trigger before Modesty slapped the barrel aside and then drove her cuffed fists between his legs. It had the desired effect. With a scream of pain the man collapsed, clutching at his private parts. Now only Chow remained.

The huge man loomed over her, a grin on his face. Surprisingly although he had more than enough time to draw his gun he had not done so, instead he leered down at her without the slightest race of fear. “So, the English bitch has teeth and claws. This is going to be interesting.”

Modesty crouched before him, breathing heavily. Behind her she could hear the moans and groans of the men she had injured. He attack had gone as planned, almost. She had hoped to catch Chow as well, but it was obvious that he was more than ready for her. What she could not figure out was why he had not drawn his pistol. Was he that arrogant that he thought he didn't need it?" Whatever the reason he was giving her the chance she needed. Recovering her strength she leapt toward him.

Chow avoided her attack easily, stepping farther back and using the fact that he stood higher than her to move out of the way. “That the best you can do?” he taunted. “You won’t get away unless you can get past me, and I am waiting.”

Modesty slowly moved up the steps. Chow was playing with her, but the mere fact that he dared to do so after watching her take out four of his men probably meant that he was confident of his abilities. It wouldn’t do to underestimate him. However, he was right; if she wanted to escape she had to go past him.

Chow continued to retreat until he reached the next landing and there he waited for her. It was a rather small arena, barely ten feet long and six feet wide. There was little room for Modesty to maneuver against her much larger opponent, but she didn’t have much choice. She approached him, balancing on the balls of her bare feet and then launched her attack.

Her handcuffed wrists impeded her, but she still had her feet. She moved toward, feinted with her hands, and then pivoting on her left foot drove her right foot toward Chow’s groin. Like a great cat Chow darted back and Modesty’s foot caught air. She jerked her leg back as Chow’s hand whipped out in an attempt to catch hold of her and then spun in a complete circle, driving her heel into his thigh. The huge man jumped back with a grunt of pain. Her heel had dug into the muscle of his thigh, a possible disabling blow, but Chow appeared to be only limping slightly and clearly on his guard. Modesty stepped back, watching for another opening.

Chow edged his leg slightly forward and Modesty went for it, attempting to sweep his foot as he transferred his weight to it. At the last instant Chow lifted his foot and crashed his body into hers. Too late Modesty realized what he was trying to do. He had her pinned in a bear hug and using his weight he slammed her to the floor.

Modesty just had time to tense her diaphragm enough to prevent the air from being knocked out of her, but Chow now had her at a serious disadvantage. Her wrists were still handcuffed and she could not fight effectively as he shifted his weight on top of her. He grabbed her wrists and forced them over her head and then twisted her arms while rising slightly. Modesty gasped as he threatened to break her arms and twisted as he desired, leaving him on top of her back, his great weight pushing her to the floor. She couldn’t move and her struggles in the thin air soon had her close to exhaustion.

She lay still attempting to figure out what Chow was up to. She could feel him moving slightly on top of her, fumbling for something, and then she felt him shift his weight forward, pinning her wrists tight against the floor. There was the chink of metal on metal and suddenly her left wrist was free of the shackle that held it. But not for long. With the handcuffs unlocked from one wrist Chow was free to rearrange her arms. He pulled them behind her in spite of Modesty’s best efforts to take advantage of the situation and break free and then locked the cuff on her wrist again leaving her arms shackled behind her back.

“Now English bitch I am going to have a little fun with you before I begin the formal interrogation.” Chow raised his body and grabbing Modesty’s arms, rolled her over on her back before settling his weight back down on her.

Modesty stared up at the huge man. He was kneeling with his weight over her hips, holding her helpless against the cold stone floor. She was well aware of the fact that in the struggle her shirt had slipped away, leaving her naked to the waist. Her rose pink nipples hardened in the cool air and jutted up from her rounded breasts. Chow reached down and closed his thumb and forefinger over each nipple and squeezed slowly until Modesty winced. She tried to maintain her composure, but she knew that Chow intended to punish her for her escape attempt and she knew how he intended to punish her. She had no defence against what he was going to do. She could only lie helpless and try desperately not to scream.

Chow shifted his hands to her breasts sinking his fingers into her firm flesh. “Beautiful,” he murmured. He tightened his grip until Modesty grunted in pain and then he released her. Moving his hands lower he began to unbuckle her belt.

Modesty realized her breath was quickening, but she could only control it with a great effort. Her breasts and nipples throbbed with pain where Chow’s fingers had mauled them and she was terrified about what was about to happen. Her loins throbbed, remembering the pain and humiliation when Kozlov and Rawlins had raped her and it was about to happen again. Without thinking she began to struggle, attempting to rise up on her elbows, as Chow opened the top of her trousers and began to work them over her buttocks and down her thighs, while at the same time trying to keep her pinned.

“You wriggle like a fish, and you are going to wiggle a lot more before I’ve finished with you.” Chow said as he slipped her trousers over her knees. He shifted his weight off her so that he could pull them down the rest of the way and over her feet. Modesty responded with a burst of energy as she made a futile attempt to break away. She kicked out at him but he caught her ankles and held her there, and then grinning in triumph he slowly pulled her legs apart and moved between them.

She grunted with the effort to escape as he unbuckled his belt and removed his sidearm and then began to unbutton his trousers. He slipped them over his hips, freeing his engorged member. Modesty could smell the strong male scent as he stroked his thick phallus. “I like the way you fight,” Chow said. “It is going to make this so much more satisfying.”

He pushed his knees against the inside of her thighs and placed his hands on her hips and then drew her to him, spreading her wide in spite of Modesty’s almost frenzied efforts to keep her legs together. Terror drove her efforts, wiping away her usual response, which was to become semi-comatose. Her brutal rape at Kozlov’s hands had shown her that did not work and now overcome by the fear of what was about to happen to her she gave in to near panic, her chest heaving, and her firm breasts quivering as Chow moved to penetrate her.

He eased his way into her, enjoying her frantic efforts to escape as he parted the lips of her vulva. Modesty gave a low moan of pain and terror and then gritted her teeth as he began to slowly thrust in and out of her, each penetrating thrust taking him a little deeper until she was fully impaled. Then he stroked in and out of her, slowly increasing his speed until he was pounding her like a pneumatic hammer. Modesty managed not to scream, but sweat streamed from her body and she panted like a steam engine climbing a steep grade as the brutal rape progressed. Chow seemed inexhaustible and he pounded her until Modesty’s senses reeled from the shock of her ordeal. And then he spurted into her with a loud cry of satisfaction.

Slowly Chow got to his feet and pulled up his pants. He loomed over the beaten woman he had just brutally raped and stared down at her. “That was excellent,” he gasped. “I shall have to do it again. But in the meantime it is only fitting that you serve the men you attacked.”

For a few seconds Modesty did not comprehend what Chow’s words meant, and then she sensed the presence of others behind her. Chow said something in Chinese and Modesty looked up as one of the men she had beaten loomed over her. He was slowly unbuttoning his trousers and behind him were two of the other men, calmly waiting their turn. “No!” she moaned. “No!”

Chapter 6 The Interrogation

Modesty bit back a cry of pain as she fell to her knees. Only with difficulty did she manage to stagger back to her feet. Her wrists were still handcuffed behind her back and the savage gang rape had left her shattered. Her loins burned from the brutal quadruple rape; her thighs were bruised and bloodied; and her breasts ached; but worst of all was the mental anguish that threatened to overwhelm her sanity. Throughout the two hour ordeal she had sought to ignore what was being done to her; to remove her mental awareness of the brutal violation of her body. But it had been near impossible. The three guards had taken her in succession while Chow stood by and jeered at her pain and suffering. Etched in her mind were his scornful words regarding her fighting abilities.

“Is this the best MI 5 has to offer? You barely tested me. But then I doubt that you have met a master of the Chinese art of Wushu. You are little more than a common thief, sneaking into the palace and hoping to steal what is ours from under our noses. Do not think I do not know what you came for. We have been waiting for someone to try and take it and now that you have you will tell me where it is. Either that or the little session you just enjoyed will seem like a picnic.”

Modesty was far too beaten to respond to the retorts. Barely able to walk she wove from side to side, struggling to keep from falling again. The guards made no effort to help her, other than giving her the occasional shove when she faltered.

By the time they returned to what Modesty thought of as the torture chamber, she was barely able to stand. Forefront in her thoughts was the knowledge that her ordeal was just beginning. Chow clearly intended to torture her until she talked, even though there was an easier way to get what he wanted. All he would have to do was threaten Willie’s life or worse yet, bring him into the room and start to work on him and she would tell them everything. But Chow either didn’t know that or didn’t care. Modesty suspected it was the latter. The look of bestial satisfaction in the man’s eyes when he had raped her left no doubt how much he would enjoy torturing her.

She was pushed into the room by one of the guards. Quickly they led her over to a thick plank that measured about eight feet long and a foot wide. It was supported on two boxes and she was forced onto it, her legs straddling it. In this helpless position two of the guards held her while the third removed her handcuffs. They then pushed her down so that her back was against the board and her wrists against a second board that had been bolted crosswise to the underside of the plank. Leather straps attached to the crosspiece were tightly secured about her wrists, leaving her lying on her back unable to rise. There were, however, three more straps to go, one for each ankle and one for her neck. Modesty was completely immobilized and knew before it happened what Chow intended for her.

The guards took each end of the board and carried her over to a large copper tub. They leaned the board against it so that Modesty’s feet were higher than her head and then while she watched they used the buckets of water to fill the tub. Chow stood over her. “Let’s keep this simple. I want the location of the treasure. If you don’t know it then tell me what you did with the map that British Intelligence stole from Alexei Kozlov.”

Modesty saved her breath. She knew she would need it for what was to come. “Alright,” Chow said,” let’s see how long you last with your head under water.”

The plank was lifted so that Modesty’s head was at one end of the tub and her feet at the other. Using the crosspiece as a pivot her feet were lifted and her head lowered, plunging her into the water.

Modesty almost released her breath. She had not expected the water to be so cold. It chilled her, adding to the feeling of complete helplessness and terror. This was part of the process of torture, to instill in the victim the knowledge that her tormentors could do anything they wanted with her and there was nothing she could do about it. There was also another frightening aspect; the fear that the torturers could always go too far. As she fought to hold her breath she wondered how long Chow would keep her submerged.

There was a fine line in the art of torture. Chow would be watching her carefully, assessing just how long she could hold on before she began to drown. He would eventually let her up, and then question her again before once more immersing her. Each time he would push the limits of the submersion a little farther until finally she would be forced to draw breath. Then she would be lifted sputtering and coughing to the surface, her lungs desperately trying to expel the water she had inhaled. He would have the board tilted so that the water would drain from her lungs and then he would start all over again. She had no illusions that she could survive such an ordeal. Eventually Chow would win. She would tell him what he wanted to know and then she would no longer be of any use to him, nor would Willie.

Her thoughts were turned from the analysis of her ordeal to merely surviving. How long had her head been under water? Her lungs were already burning, her diaphragm beginning to spasm as it sought to force her to breathe. And then she was tipped upward, water streaming from her head and torso to see Chow standing over her.

“Hmm, that was impressive. Over two minutes. Your lungs are very well developed.” As he spoke Chow’s hands went to Modesty’s breasts and stroked the bruised flesh. Her sensitive nipples were quite erect from the cold and tingled as his fingers swept over them. “Now, shall we try for three or do you have something you want to say?”

Modesty’s silence gave him his answer. Chow motioned and once again the guards ducked her into the water. This time she tried counting the seconds 120… 121… She reached 185, and her lungs were on fire, her chest heaving as she fought back the desperate desire to breathe, and then she was tilted up again. She sucked in air in great shuddering gasps, barely aware of Chow stroking her body.

“You are magnificent. I never suspected that you could hold out that long. But I think that is your limit. The next time you will be forced to breathe and then who knows what might happen?”

Modesty was gasping too hard to have answered, but Chow took her lack of response as another refusal to speak. He nodded and once more the board was tilted into the water. This time she knew her lungs could not last. She was tiring rapidly. The strain of her body was too great for her to endure much more in the way of punishment. She lasted less than two minutes before giving in to her body’s demands.

She breathed - and sucked in air. Chow stood over her, grinning. “You didn’t really think I would let you drown did you? I’m enjoying this game. Let’s see how long you want to play.” The board tilted down again and the water swirled around her. By now the continued emersions, had her not only short of air, but also shivering as she descended into the depths of hypothermia. Chow’s game was slowly killing her.

She came up reeling from lack of oxygen, the shivering even more violent, but Chow did not let up. He had her dunked again and then again, until she was completely disoriented, gasping desperately for air, and hardly able to grab a breath before being plunged into the water once more. She finally sucked water into her lungs, as Chow had known she would, and came up coughing and sputtering uncontrollably. Desperate for air, she tried to suck it into her lungs while simultaneously trying to expel the water. The result was a fit of coughing that racked her body for several minutes. Coupled with the cold she was near unconscious when Chow finally relented.

Chow stood over her. “Enough for now. I have all the time I want to make you tell me what I want to know. Eventually you will break. But in the meantime it is time to do something about that shivering.” He turned to the guards and said something in Chinese. They stepped forward and unstrapped Modesty’s shaking body from the plank. Lifting her to her feet they carried her down the hall.

Modesty had no idea where she was being taken and was far too close to unconsciousness to even notice where she was. She was dragged into a small room and dumped on a cot. Vaguely she realized that the room where she had been taken was much better furnished than the cells where she and Willie had first been taken, but it didn’t register as to why until the handcuffs clicked on her wrists and she heard the door close.

She was alone with Chow and lying face down on his bed with her wrists handcuffed to the railing at the top of the cot. By now she was shaking so badly from the effects of the cold water that she was barely aware of Chow as he stripped off his clothing and then she felt his heavy presence as he pressed his naked body against her.

His weight pressed her down into the bed almost suffocating her. He laughed close to her right ear. “It wouldn’t do to have you die before you have told me what I want to know, but you must be warmed up and this is the perfect way to do it.”

Modesty was too weak to even struggle, but she moaned in pain as Chow parted her thighs and pushed his thick member between the lips of her bruised vulva. He took her slowly inching into her with long easy movements of his huge body. At first she felt almost nothing, but as he body warmed each thrust and every half inch of penetration became pure agony as he penetrated her swollen vagina. Slowly he quickened his pace until the rhythm of the rape began to heat her chilled body. His sweat dripped onto her and as her core temperature rose so did the pain, until she was gasping in agony. Chow had saved her life, but in the most brutal way possible. But it was about to get much worse.

Satisfied that he had at least partially revived her, Chow pulled out of her and shifted his weight higher, until his now slick phallus slid between the moons of her buttocks. Knowing what was going to happen Modesty strained weakly against her bonds, but she had no chance stopping Chow from penetrating her anus. She cried out weakly as he pushed into her, forcing open her tight sphincter and ravaging her while she fought futilely to escape. Pinned beneath Chow’s sweating hulk, she was helpless to prevent him from grunting his way slowly into her.

Almost weeping from the pain, Modesty collapsed from exhaustion and for the remainder of the rape lay limply on the cot, too weak to even raise her head. Only when Chow had fully satisfied himself did he pull out and lie beside her, panting from his exertions.

“That was quite satisfactory,” he crowed. He placed his left arm around her, rolling her over slightly so that he could grope her breasts. “Tomorrow we will continue. Sooner or later your will to resist will be broken. But please do not feel the need to hurry on my account. I am enjoying the process immensely.”

Modesty closed her eyes. Deep inside burned a desire for vengeance that was so strong it forced all other thoughts from her mind. Somehow she would escape. And when she did Chow would come to rue the day he had ever met her.

EXHAUSTION allowed Modesty to sleep, but her rest was fitful and punctuated by frightful dreams in which she was raped over and over again by Chow and his henchmen. When she awoke she found to her chagrin that Chow was gone. She had been too exhausted to even notice when he had left the bed. Still chained to the head of the bed she could do little more than lie where she was and shiver in the cold. Chow’s room was not much different from a cell, and chained as she was, there was no way she could even begin to attempt an escape. Soon Chow and his henchmen would come for her and then the ordeal would begin all over again. It was a chilling thought and something that she could do nothing to prevent. Even if she had managed to get off the bed, there was nothing in the room to help her; not even as much as a comb. Apparently Chow used the room for nothing more than raping his female captives between interrogation sessions.

Twisting her body she managed to roll over. Something at the back of her mind told her that there might be something she could use. She could just manage to pull up the edge of the mattress and peer beneath it. She could remember the squeaking of the bedsprings as Chow had thrust into her and was rewarded with the sight of a crudely interwoven system of wires supporting the mattress. Stretching the cuffs to the maximum, she managed to get her fingers on one of the small pieces of metal and began to work it back and forth. The bedsprings were crudely made, consisting of interlinked strands of ordinary wire. She was able to work a bit of metal back and forth until finally metal fatigue did its work and it broke off. At that moment a noise outside the door alerted her to Chow’s return. Quickly she bent her head and tucked the small piece of wire into her mouth. It was not the perfect hiding place, especially with what Chow and his goons were going to do to her. She moulded it to her gum line, hoping that it would not fly out if she screamed and waited to see what Chow had in mind for her.

A key turned in the lock and the door was thrown open. Chow entered, followed by three of his henchmen. He stood over her, a leering grin on his face. “Time for another session, Miss Blaise. I hope it does not take so much out of you that you cannot grace my bed again. I find our lovemaking to be most exhilarating.”

“Lovemaking? It that what you call rape? I expect that it is the only way you can get a woman.” Modesty’s words burned with rage, but it was merely her way of hiding her fear. She couldn’t afford to cringe in front of her captors. If she did she would break and then it would be all over for her and Willie.

“You are more resilient than I thought,” Chow replied. “But do not doubt that I will break you. It is only a matter of time. Until then, the process of achieving that goal will be most enjoyable.”

Modesty kept any retort to herself. She had made her point and she suspected she would need all of her strength in the next few hours if she was not to betray Willie. She had little doubt that Chow was holding her partner in reserve just in case he could not break her. If she somehow managed to survive what her was going to do to her without breaking then it would be Willie’s turn next and Modesty did not know what she would do if faced with the prospect of either talking or allowing Willie to be tortured.

Her thoughts were wrenched back to the present as she was hauled into the interrogation room. Her eyes went immediately to the copper tub where she had been nearly drowned the previous day. However, this time Chow had something else in mind. The guards apparently already knew what he wanted. They dragged her to the centre of the room and attached her handcuffed wrists to a chain hanging from the ceiling. With a few quick tugs the chain was tightened raising her arms over her head and forcing her on to the tips of her toes. The position was extremely uncomfortable, but Modesty feared more what she knew was coming next. She was more than aware of the various bits of electrical apparatus hanging around the room and knew that she was in a perfect position for Chow to use it on her.

Her fears were immediately proven true when Chow’s henchmen drenched her with buckets of shockingly cold water. For awhile they did nothing else but keep her soaked, but it was enough. Within a short time she was shivering uncontrollably as the cold seeped into her bones. Then Chow approached her. Slowly he circled her, observing Modesty’s trembling body. Her perfectly rounded breasts slowly rose and fell; her nipples hard and dripping with water. “You cannot win, Miss Blaise,” Chow gloated. “Everything is stacked in my favour. Why not tell me what I want to know and then we can get on with the more pleasant aspects of our relationship.”

Modesty was shivering so hard she could barely speak, but she would not have answered in any case as Chow almost certainly expected. He nodded to his henchman and Modesty felt the touch of metal against her toes as metal clips were attached to them. Chow moved in front of her holding two wooden poles from which trailed copper wire. Sponges were wrapped around the top of each pole and would serve as conductors for an electrical current when wet. Modesty was familiar with the torture device although she had never seen it used. She was about to find out first hand just how effective it was. Chow dipped the sponges into a bucket of water, and then he touched the sponges to Modesty’s breasts, completing the circuit.

“Aaaahh!” Modesty’s scream was completely involuntary. The surge of electrical current though her sensitive breasts and over the surface of her damp skin was excruciating. But Chow was just beginning. While his henchmen continued to douse her with buckets of frigid water he moved the water-soaked sponges over her body, touching her between her legs, on her buttocks and belly, and of course targeting her breasts again and again. Each touch was brutally painful, but left no mark. That blessing was lost on Modesty as she screamed until she was hoarse, but still Chow kept up the torture until she was so exhausted that her body no longer heaved when the crude electrodes made contact. “Take her back to my room,” Chow ordered.

Barely conscious, and still sobbing with the pain of her ordeal she could not prevent her captors from dragging her to Chow’s cell and tying her to the cot. Her body throbbed where the electric current had surged through her. Chow had concentrated on her breasts and the area between her thighs and Modesty felt as if the skin had been stripped form her body in those regions. But her agonized condition did not save her from another round of Chow’s “lovemaking.”

He was especially brutal this time, beginning with the insertion of an ivory dildo into her anus. It was flared at the end so that once inserted it would not easily work its way out, and Modesty sobbed in pain at the vile intrusion. Then Chow rolled her over and forcing himself between her thighs fucked her mercilessly. Already sore from his earlier efforts, Modesty felt every savage thrust. It was like being raped with sandpaper, but as on the previous night it probably saved her life, forcing heat into her chilled body even as she was brutally violated. She was left soaked in both her own sweat and Chow’s, still moaning from the pain of the dildo in her backside.

Chow leaned over her, supporting his weight on his hands as he straddled her. He bent his head and took her left nipple between his teeth and bit down until it bled and then slowly licked the blood from the ravished bud.

“Tomorrow you will break,” Chow said quietly. “You will tell me everything that I wish to know. You are very strong, but I can sense than you are close to breaking. No woman can stand this sort of punishment forever.”

Modesty’s only reply was an agonized cry as the dildo was wrenched from her anus. Chow gave it a final twist as he pulled it free, sending spasms of pain through her. Even so, she barely moved as he hurt her. Exhaustion had claimed her and even if he had removed the handcuffs Modesty would have been too weak to escape. But Chow was wrong. She was not yet ready to break. She had been tortured before and in spite of the complete feeling of helplessness such a process created she had survived without betraying what her captors wanted to know. It was no different this time. He might make her scream and subject her to the most degrading indignities, but he had not yet broken her spirit. And just as important, the small piece of wire she had tucked between her lip and her gums was still there.

“Bastard,” Modesty thought. “I’m going to make you regret you ever laid eyes on me.”

Chapter 7 Breakout

CHOW WAS gone when Modesty awoke. She had fallen into a sleep that more resembled a coma than natural sleep. Something, however, woke her up, something that she was able to identify as a scream. “Willy?” she wondered. Then realized that the screams were mixed with cries for mercy in Tibetan. For a few seconds she felt relief until she realized that some other poor soul was being brutally tortured. The thought roused her from her stupor. Where Chow had gone she had no idea, but she knew that she wasn’t going to be left alone for very long. With some effort she managed to transfer the small piece of wire she had fixed in her gum line into her fingers. It wasn’t much to work with, but she had not spent a good part of her life picking locks without retaining some skills.

Doggedly she worked the bit of wire at the lock mechanism. She had to force herself not to hurry and focus on the task; something that was not easy with the knowledge that Chow or one of the guards might enter the cell at any moment. Fortunately, the handcuffs were not of the most sophisticated manufacture and with a rewarding click the first cuff released. With one hand free, it took her even less time to remove the second cuff. For the first time in several days she was not bound or handcuffed. The sensation of freedom was almost overwhelming, and completely inaccurate. She was no longer handcuffed, but there was still a cell door and dozens of guards between her and freedom.

Fortunately Chow had left her a blanket that she could use to cover her nude body while she waited. She pulled it over her, mindful of the fact that if Chow returned she would have to toss it off to avoid suspicion. With little more to do than wait she tried to relax, listening for the sounds of approaching footsteps.

They came at last and she slipped her hands back into the cuffs while kicking the blanket to the floor. Closing her eyes she tried to compose herself while the sounds of footsteps halted outside her door. There was a wait of a few seconds and she could imagine Chow peering through the tiny barred window, making sure that she was still tightly secured. Then the bolt was thrown back and the door opened. Chow entered the room. Fear sharpened her senses and she could tell without seeing him who it was. Even without recognizing his footsteps she would have known him by the smell of his sweat, a smell with which she had become all too familiar. She could also tell that he was alone, probably because he planned to enjoy her one more time before continuing to torture her.

“Open your eyes, Miss Blaise. I have been in this game too long to be fooled by someone pretending to sleep. Open your eyes or I will slap you awake.”

Modesty did as Chow instructed, staring up at him with what she hoped was a mixture of fear and defiance. “You’d no doubt enjoy such a gutless act,” Modesty replied. “After all I can’t fight back.”

“Still defiant,” Chow replied. “You amaze me. You’re right, I would enjoy slapping you and I may do that before I am finished our little session, but I am going to enjoy fucking you a great deal more.” His hands went to his belt and he began to undo the buckle.

Modesty waited until his pants were around his ankles before making her move. She came off the bed like a panther, uncoiling in a single smooth motion; the handcuffs gripped in her fists like brass knuckles, and slammed the metal ring of the cuffs between Chow’s eyes. The huge Chinese staggered back, his feet tangling in his pants and then toppled back, slamming his head against the heavy cell door.

Modesty followed him off the bed and stood over him, her feet on either side of his head, ready to slam her foot into his throat. But it wasn’t necessary. Blood flowed from the cut between his eyes and from his right ear. It was apparent that he probably wouldn’t be a threat for some time, and Modesty made sure that he stayed that way. Rolling him over she handcuffed his hands behind him and then fashioned a gag out of his underwear and stuffed it into his mouth. She then used his belt to tie his ankles. Satisfied with her work she went to the door of the cell and peered into the corridor. Finding it deserted she took the blanket from the bed and wrapped it about herself. It wasn’t much of a covering, but it would have to do for now. She used Chow’s belt to help hold her makeshift gown in place, and then picking up his gun she moved into the corridor.

She looked both ways. To her right the corridor disappeared into darkness, but it was also the direction from which the screams had come. Guessing that she probably had a few minutes, as Chow would probably have told the guards not to show up until her had enough time to rape her, Modesty started off into the darkness.

She went slowly giving her eyes a chance to adapt to the dark, and found that it was not as dark as she had thought. There was a glimmer of light from the end of the corridor and she slowly moved toward it. As she got closer she could hear voices and slowed even more, until she was barely moving. Coming to a corner she poked her head around it and saw the source of the light.

Four men were seated at a crude table on equally rustic chairs. They were deeply engrossed in playing mahjong, laughing and chatting as they clicked the ivory tiles. Unfortunately for them, they had two things Modesty wanted – a set of clothes that might fit her, and the means to engineer a distraction. She stepped into the light, her pistol at the ready and her finger to her lips.

There was a definite language barrier, but the gun and her signal were unmistakable. The four men froze and Modesty motioned again, moving her hand in a downward motion. The guards hit the floor, all but one. Assuming that she was distracted by the other three, he went for his sidearm. The crack of Modesty’s pistol echoed down the corridor and the guard dropped, shot through the middle of his body. “Damn!” she muttered. “I didn’t need for that to happen.” Moving quickly, she disarmed the remaining guards and then picked up a heavy ring laden with keys from the top of the table. Booting the guards to their feet she motioned toward the nearest cell and herded them into it, and then closed and locked the door.

The guard she had killed was close to her size, but she refused to put on his bloody shirt. However, his boots and pants fit her closely enough to see her though until she found something better. Tossing aside the blanket she grabbed a loose-fitting jacket to cover her upper body and then headed down the corridor, unlocking one cell after the other.

She had no idea why the prisoners she released had been incarcerated and she didn’t much care. What she wanted was to cause as much confusion as possible and turn that to her advantage. As the prisoners boiled out of their cells and ran for the exits, Modesty headed back toward the interrogation room and the cell where she had last seen Willie.

She was breathing hard by the time she reached the room where she had been tortured. Her ordeal had taken a good deal out of her and what she needed more than anything else was several weeks of rest and recuperation, but that would have to wait. The cell where Willie was being held (if he was still there) was just ahead. Normally it would be in an area that was heavily guarded, but this time there remained only a single guard. The sounds of shooting and the shouts and screams escaping prisoners echoed throughout the vast temple complex. There was little problem in adding the sound of one more shot to the continual fusillade.

Her bullet took the guard though the chest and he collapsed without a sound. Moving quickly she found the keys to the cells and went to the one she hoped held Willie. She got it right first time and almost received a punch in the nose for her troubles.

“Jesus, Princess,” Willie exclaimed. “I thought you were one of Chow’s wankers.” Then he got a good look at her and his expression changed to one of rage. “That bastard,” he growled. “Where’s that bastard, Chow?”

“It’s alright, Willie,” Modesty replied. “He’s on ice for now. We still have something to find and probably not much time.”

“Princess…” Willie began, but Modesty cut him off.

“No, Willie. I’ve paid a pretty high price on this mission and I’m damned well going to see it through.” She didn’t add that she would do it alone if Willie refused to come. Willie Garvin would never abandon her in such a situation.

“Right, Princess,” he said. He crossed to the fallen guard and looted his sidearm. “We’d better get going.”

The trip back down to the pit where she and Willie had been captured was sheer hell, but Modesty didn’t tell him that. The adrenaline surge she had experienced when she had escaped was long gone and she was moving under sheer willpower. But somehow she made it, retrieved the map and made her way to the place where the Heart of Tibet was supposedly hidden. Without the map it would never have been found. They ended up in a section of corridor that looked like every other section, facing a blank wall of fitted stone. Modesty counted according to the map’s instructions. “Three from the floor and five from the corner.” She placed her hand on a stone about a foot square and pushed. Nothing happened and Willie stepped forward.

“Here, let me try,” he said, taking out a knife he had filched from the table outside his cell. It was not one of his beautifully balanced throwing knives, but it was probably just as well considering what he did with it. Forcing the blade between the blocks of stone he used it as a pry bar and was rewarded when the stone moved. Grabbing the edge of the stone he eased it out, revealing a cavity about two feet deep.

Modesty stepped forward. Pointing the torch she had acquired from one of the guards, she peered into the hole. Inside there was what appeared to be a roll of cloth. Reaching in she retrieved it, set in on the floor and cut the red ribbon that encircled the bundle. Slowly she unrolled the bundle and then let out a low gasp of astonishment.

Modesty had seen many gems, many more than she had a right to, but this display took her breath away. “Encroyable,” she muttered.

“About as pretty a bunch of baubles as I’ve ever laid eyes on,” Willie commented.

“Right,” Modesty commented. “Now let’s go before anyone thinks to look for us.” Tying up the bundle once again she stuffed it inside her shirt and then headed back the way they had come.

Somehow, the walk back seemed shorter in spite of the fact that it was uphill all the way. Buoyed by her success, Modesty managed to push her fatigue behind her and reached the part of the Potala where she and Willie had been imprisoned. Chaos still reigned and it was not difficult to find their way back to the cell where Modesty had left Chow.

Her brutal captor was conscious when they entered the cell, something that made it a lot easier to get him to the room where he had spent two days torturing her. Chow rolled his eyes as Modesty, with Willie’s help, tied him strappado using the same ceiling chains he had used to bind her. Then he whimpered in fear as Modesty attached the electrodes to his genitals.

“I’d love to stay and keep you company,” Modesty said as she completed the connections. “But I have a package to deliver.” She had hooked up all of the batteries in series. “I expect the batteries will run down in time, or if you are lucky someone may come looking for you. Until then, goodbye.” She threw the switch and left to the sound of Chow’s muffled screams.

Epilogue

MODESTY SIPPED delicately at her glass of mint tea and then set the final gem in place. The perfect circle of emeralds glowed under the bright light she used to illustrate her work. “That’s a work of art, Princess,” Willie commented. “A real work of art.”

“Isn’t it?” Modesty smiled. “It was so nice of Tarrant to let us keep these few gems for my collection.”

“‘E might not ‘ave been so obliging if you’d told ‘im you found more than the ‘Eart of Tibet,” Willie remarked.

“Do you really think so?” Modesty grinned, fastening the finished pendant about her elegant throat and stepping to the mirror where she could admire her work.

“Exquisite,” she thought. “Some of my best work. And why not? I paid a very high price for it.” Her smile gone, she lifted her teacup.
