CHAPTER VII

Detective Lisa Kozny pulled up by the ranks of squad cars and exited the car. A couple of uniformed officers stood by the perimeter crime scene tape as a ferry of white suited forensics people moved in their gear.

"Morning detective, another fine day...." quipped an officer wielding a clipboard.

"Hey, who's here ? " smiled Kozny as she signed in on the clipboard.

"The M.E is there, the photographer too and the guy who found the body, they are getting a statement now."

"Ok... Let's take a look.....gloves?" Lisa asked as she was promptly presented a cardboard box stuffed full of crime scene gloves.

Snapping the gloves on she ducked under the tape and proceeded towards the gaggle of white suits, the photographers camera flashing brightly. They were in the confines of an underground car park and the camera flash gave the illusion of an approaching storm.

A suited man, quite overweight, was face down in a pool of blood lay semi curled up close to the open door of a car, apparently his. The mans back had a dark circle of blood covering his jacket, presumably from his fatal wound.

"So.... what happened to you.?...." Lisa asked quietly to herself.

"Hi...Detective...oh it's you..." said the M.E as he stooped down next to the body.

"Hey, sorry I should have brought in some coffee...." Lisa said noticing her colleague looking a little dishevelled.

"Don't worry, a little longer and I'm off to bed, I'll hand this one on, I've been up all night with some freaky murder suicide.... anyway...enough of that.... the news is that your vic here was killed only a few hours ago .....died where he fell, no trails... " the M.E continued, glancing at his calculations.

"...the murder weapon you're looking for...... appears to be a screwdriver, flat head probably...." he said, his bright flashlight momentarily showing the puncture mark into the jacket. "The shaft appears to be six to eight inches long....oh and judging from the angle....the perp is right handed but wait til I get him back for examination."

Lisa sighed, the damned screwdriver guy. She had seen bulletins about a mugger using a screwdriver to threaten victims into handing over money but now he'd gone one step further, murder.

"Have you photographed the body?" Lisa asked glancing at the photographer who nodded.

"Help me roll him would you..." Lisa continued, she was curious what may be pinned beneath the man if anything.

The M.E rolled the body slightly at the shoulders and Lisa peered beneath, revealing one of the mans hands clutching his car keys and the other.....

"What's that....." Lisa wondered, the other hand was gripping some piece of paper. Carefully she prized the hand open and drew out the little slip of paper and gently unfolded it. Scrawled in pencil were letters and numbers but she didn't understand what they meant. What was that , N5 or NS something....was that an X or K...who knew?

Standing up Lisa bagged the note and glanced at the wallet on the ground nearby, it appeared to have been turned out, a few loose coins and receipts lay close, presumably dropped after being emptied.

"So, confrontation there....you give the wallet.....then run......but he chases you here....to the car and ....stabs you ...why.......?" Lisa glanced around the uncomplicated scene.

It seemed like a simple mugging gone wrong, but why did it have to go wrong? The guy had given up his wallet already so....

BING

Lisa heard her mobile sound and she checked for a message.

Lucy.

Lisa let a little smile escape as she read the message. The pair remained flirtatious despite their positions either side of the law, and Lisa was itching to get on top of her , oh so naughty, oh so mischievous ...."oh my god you're so gorgeous I want to squish you into a million pieces" friend.

"I confess, I was naughty, call me ?" said the message, a faux pouting sad face selfie of Lucy appearing.

Lisa recalled the night when Lucy tricked her into going "pop" only then having to act out her role of chauffeur to take her home. The lateness of the hour by then meant the two parted company with only a kiss, a pleasant memory that still lingered.

"Soon! " Lisa thought turning back to face the body.

"Ok, so who was the vic....?" asked Lisa of the uniformed officers.
